There are scholars in the world who work diligently and study hard. They focus their minds on affairs, sitting or standing for long periods in damp places, and do not move frequently. Cold wind strikes and enters the meridians, and without realizing it, disease forms. Thus, wind-toxin attacks the human body; sometimes it first attacks the ten fingers of the hands and feet. Because at this time the sweat pores are open and the couli (interstices) are loose, the wind attacks like an arrow. Sometimes it first attacks the sole of the foot; sometimes it first attacks the dorsum of the foot; sometimes it first attacks the exterior and interior of the lower legs below the knees. If one wishes to prevent disease from forming, as soon as discomfort is felt, moxibustion should be applied to the affected area for 30-20 Zhu (units of moxa cone size/burns). Consequently, the person will recover and not relapse. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Generally, when Hong Kong Jiao (Foot Qi Disease/Jiaji) initially presents with weakness in the feet, moxibustion should be performed immediately, and Zhuli Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction) should be taken. After moxibustion, Bafeng San (Eight Winds Powder) can be taken; there is no case that does not heal. Rapid treatment is essential. If one only performs moxibustion but does not take the powder, or takes the powder but does not perform moxibustion, the condition will be half-healed and half-dead (severe). Even if healed, it may relapse after one or two years. Once a relapse is felt, follow this method for rapid moxibustion and take the powder; treating ten cases results in ten cures. Although this disease is mild and may not show immediate severe symptoms, if treated improperly and the root cause is not eliminated, it will eventually kill over time. It must not be ignored. Initial moxibustion points are selected in order: Fengshi (GB31), Futu (ST32), Dubi (ST35), Xiyan (EX-LE5), Zusanli (ST36), Shanglian (ST37), Xialian (ST38), and Jiexu (GB39). Moxibustion is applied to these eight points. 1. Fengshi (GB31): 100 Zhu. More is permissible depending on the patient's tolerance. For mild cases, do not reduce below 100 Zhu; for severe cases, up to 500-600 Zhu on one point. Do not apply all at once; applying in three sessions is better. 2. Futu (ST32): 100 Zhu, or 50 Zhu. 3. Dubi (ST35): 50 Zhu, up to 100 Zhu. 4. Xiyan (EX-LE5). 5. Zusanli (ST36): 100 Zhu. 6. Shanglian (ST37): 100 Zhu. 7. Xialian (ST38): 100 Zhu. 8. Jiexu (GB39). For these points, it is not necessary to complete the total number of Zhu in one session; they can be applied daily in batches. Completing the total Zhu count within three days is optimal.
If the disease is in one foot, moxibustion is applied to one foot; if in both feet, to both feet. For Foot Weakness disease, both feet are always moxibusted. One prescription states: if foot discomfort is felt, moxibustion is applied to one location each on Zusanli (ST36) and Jiexu (GB39). If both feet are uncomfortable, four locations are moxibusted in total. The quantity depends on the severity of the disease. The general principle is that even for mild cases, the dose should not be less than 100 Zhu. If ineffective, proceed to moxibust other points in sequence; more is better. Another opinion holds that moxibustion on Jiexu (GB39) is most important. Some patients suffer from Foot Weakness and do not treat it promptly until the pathogen enters the abdomen, causing abdominal swelling and rebellious Qi. At this stage, major moxibustion therapy is required, covering various Shu points, joints, and the abdomen and back, combined with Bafeng San (Eight Winds Powder), often resulting in recovery. If the pathogen has entered the abdomen and the patient cannot tolerate pain for major moxibustion, moxibustion can be limited to points on the chest, heart, abdomen, and feet, which also yields good results. This follows the old method of Zhi Facun. Points include Liangqiu (ST34), Dubi (ST35), Zusanli (ST36), Shanglian (ST37), Xialian (ST38), Jiexi (ST41), Taichong (LR3), Yanglingquan (GB34), Jiexu (GB39), Kunlun (BL60), Yinlingquan (SP9), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Feixi (KI7 - *Note: Text says "Zu Taiyin" likely referring to Sanyinjiao or similar, but lists specific names later*), Fuliu (KI7), Ran Gu (KI2), Yongquan (KI1), Chengshan (BL57), Shugu (BL65), etc., totaling eighteen points. Old methods often moxibusted Baihui (GV20) and Fengfu (GV16), and the Shu and Mu points of the Zang-Fu organs. Recently, practitioners found that moxibusting these points draws Qi upward, so this method is not adopted. It can be used if Qi does not rise. For critical cases where the disease is established and rescue seems unlikely, all these points must be moxibusted. On the ten toes, one fen away from the tip, there are eight points on both feet, named "Ba Chong" by Cao Shi, which are extremely effective in descending Qi. The tips of the ten toes are named "Qi Duan", moxibusted with 3 Zhu daily, also a key method. Ba Chong can be moxibusted with 7 Zhu daily, stopping when Qi descends. When moxibusting Ba Chong, the moxa cones should be small. Patients who do not deeply understand this should not undergo this moxibustion. Shanglian (ST37) treats Bi syndrome (Pian Feng) of the leg, heaviness preventing walking, Hong Kong Jiao piercing wind, and cold wind feet. (From *Ming Tang Zhen Jiu Tu*) Jianjing (GB21) treats Hong Kong Jiao attacking upwards. (From *Tong Ren Shu Xue Zhen Jiu Tu Jing*)
*Qian Jin Fang* states that Hong Kong Jiao is best treated with acupuncture. If one uses acupuncture but not moxibustion, or moxibustion but not acupuncture, they are not a good physician. Using both acupuncture/moxibustion and medicine, but medicine without acupuncture/moxibustion, is also not a good physician. This argument is appropriate.
If Hong Kong Jiao is just beginning, rapidly moxibust Fengshi (GB31) and Zusanli (ST36), 100-200 Zhu each, to drain Wind-Damp-Toxin. If feeling hot and stifling, do not moxibust, as heat already exists; moxibustion would greatly assist the generation of wind. Diet strictly forbids alcohol, wheat products, seafood, and sexual exertion. Otherwise, taking medicine is useless. (From *Zhi Mi Fang*)
A roommate told me that Shi Zaizhi said Hong Kong Jiao has Wind-Damp and Damp-Wind types, suitable for draining rather than tonifying, and should only be treated with Chenxiang Tang (Agarwood Decoction) for draining. (See *Ji Xiao Fang*). This implies a certain insight. Generally, for moxibusting Hong Kong Jiao, Zusanli (ST36) and Jiexu (GB39) are key points, with self-care being paramount. I previously suffered from this disease; if I avoided dampness, it did not recur for several years. If I stepped in dampness, it recurred frequently. Since then, I have always avoided dampness. I dare not step in water or wet ground with shoes, nor stand on wet ground for long, moving my feet frequently to avoid trouble. This is the second aspect of self-care. A high official suffered from Hong Kong Jiao for a long time and recovered after taking Babai Wan (Eight-Tonics Pill) multiple times, because Hong Kong Jiao attacking the heart can only be treated by this medicine.
