The twelve meridians consist of the three Yang meridians of the hand, the three Yin meridians of the hand, the three Yang meridians of the foot, and the three Yin meridians of the foot, collectively known as the Twelve Meridians. The *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot) states: "At the junctions of the joints, there are 365 acupoints." The term "joint" here refers to the places where Shen Qi (Vital Energy and Spirit) travels in and out, not referring to skin, flesh, sinews, or bones. It is further stated that "Shen Qi" is Zheng Qi (Upright/Healthy Qi). The process of Shen Qi traveling in and out is called Liu Zhu (Flowing and Pouring); the Jing-Well, Ying-Spring, Shu-Stream, Jing-River, and He-Sea points are also known as Ben Shu (Original Transport) points. (From *Ling Shu*) The Twelve Meridians originally constitute one continuous pathway, merely divided into twelve segments for description. (From Li Dongyuan)
The meridian of Hand-Taiyin Lung originates from the Middle Jiao (Zhongfu LU-1), descends to connect with the Large Intestine, circles around the upper opening of the Stomach, pierces through the Diaphragm, and belongs to the Lung. From the Lung system (trachea, larynx, etc., tissues connected to the lung), it emerges horizontally from under the axilla (Tianfu LU-3), descends along the anterior aspect of the medial side of the upper arm (the area between the shoulder and elbow is generally called Nao), running anterior to the Heart-Shaoyin and Pericardium-Jueyin meridians. It descends into the cubital fossa (the relaxed area at the elbow is called Zhou, i.e., Chize LU-5), follows the medial aspect of the forearm (the bone below the elbow leading to the palm is called Bi; the forearm has two bones), ascends along the lower edge of the radius, enters the Cun Kou (pulse position at the wrist, containing Jingqu LU-8 and Taiyuan LU-9), passes over the Thenar eminence, follows the radial border of the thenar eminence (Yuji LU-10), and emerges at the tip of the thumb (Shaoshang LU-11).
Its branch (Lieque LU-7) arises from behind the wrist, goes straight out to the medial side of the index finger, and emerges at its tip (connecting to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian).
When this meridian undergoes pathological changes, it causes Lung distension, fullness, bloating, wheezing, and coughing; pain in the Supraclavicular Fossa (Quepen). In severe cases, the patient may cross both hands over the chest and experience visual disturbance (Mao); this is termed Bi Jue (Arm Jue syndrome).
This meridian governs diseases generated by the Lung: cough, asthma, panting, irritability, chest fullness, pain along the anterior medial aspect of the upper arm, coldness/jue sensation, and heat in the palm.
Excess patterns manifest as shoulder and back pain, aversion to wind, sweating due to wind-stroke, frequent urination, and yawning. Deficiency patterns manifest as shoulder and back pain, coldness, shortness of breath, and inability to breathe deeply.
In excess conditions, the Cun Kou pulse is three times larger than the Renying pulse. In deficiency conditions, the Cun Kou pulse is smaller than the Renying pulse. (From *Ling Shu*) Every morning during the Yin hour (03:00–05:00), Qi starts from Zhongfu LU-1, flows down the arm, and stops at Shaoshang LU-11. (From *Yixue Rumen*)
Shaoshang (LU-11): Two points located at the radial side of the tip of the thumb, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the nail. This is the Jing-Well point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian, where Qi emerges. Needle depth: 1 fen; retain for 3 breaths; use reducing method (insert during expiration or manipulate during inhalation for 5 cycles). Moxibustion is prohibited. (From *Tongren*) Bleeding can drain heat from all Zang organs. (From *Ling Shu*) Puncture with a three-edged needle to induce slight bleeding to drain heat accumulating in the Zang organs. For throat swelling and obstruction preventing swallowing of water or food, needling this point brings immediate relief. (From *Zisheng*)
Yuji (LU-10): Two points located on the medial side of the thenar eminence, just distal to the first metacarpophalangeal joint, within the scattered vessels. This is the Ying-Spring point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian, where Qi flows. Needle depth: 2 fen; retain for 3 breaths. Moxibustion is prohibited. (From *Yixue Rumen*)
Taiyuan (LU-9): Two points, also named Taiquan, located in the depression at the proximal end of the transverse crease of the wrist. Another view places it 1 cun distal to Yuji in the depression. This is the Shu-Stream point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian, where Qi pours in. Needle depth: 2 fen; moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. (From *Tongren*)
Jingqu (LU-8): Two points located at the Cun Kou pulse position. This is the Jing-River point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian, where Qi travels. Needle depth: 2 fen; retain for 3 breaths. Moxibustion is prohibited, as it damages the person's Shen (Spirit). (From *Tongren*)
Lieque (LU-7): Two points located 1.5 cun above the wrist crease on the radial side. To locate, cross the hands; the point lies in the gap between the two bones where the tip of the middle finger rests. This is the Luo-Connecting point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian, which connects to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian. Needle depth: 2 fen; retain for 3 breaths; use reducing method (manipulate during inhalation for 5 cycles); moxibustion: 7 moxa cones. (From *Zisheng*)
Kongzui (LU-6): Two points located 7 cun above the wrist crease on the radial side, in the hollow depression. This is the Xi-Cleft point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Needle depth: 3 fen; moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. (From *Tongren*)
Chize (LU-5): Two points located in the center of the cubital crease. (From *Tongren*) ○ It is the arterial pulse in the elbow. Another view says it is in the arterial pulse on the cubital crease. (From *Gangmu*) ○ Located in the transverse crease when flexing and extending the arm, in the depression between the sinews and bones. Another view says it is in the arterial pulse between the two sinews above the cubital crease. (From *Zisheng*) ○ It is the He-Sea point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian, where Qi enters. Needle depth: 3 fen; moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. (From *Tongren*) Another view states it should not be moxibusted. (From *Yixue Rumen*)
Xiabai (LU-2): Two points located below Tianfu LU-3, 5 cun above the elbow, in the arterial pulse. Needle depth: 3 fen; moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. (From *Tongren*)
Tianfu (LU-3): Two points located 3 cun below the axilla, in the arterial pulse on the medial aspect of the arm. To locate, raise the arm and align with the tip of the nose. Needle depth: 3 fen; retain for 3 breaths. Moxibustion is prohibited. (From *Tongren*)
Yunmen (LU-2): Two points located below the Jugu bone (clavicle/acromion area), 2 cun lateral to Qihu (ST-14), in the depression where an arterial pulse is palpable. To locate, raise the arm. Needle depth: 3 fen; moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. Do not needle too deeply, as it may cause Qi rebellion; therefore, deep insertion is unsuitable. (From *Jia Yi Jing*) ○ Located in the second intercostal space below Renying (ST-9), 2.4 cun apart. (From *Zisheng*)
Zhongfu (LU-1): Two points, the "curtain" of the Lung, also named Yingzhongshu. Located 1 cun below Yunmen LU-2, in the depression, in the third intercostal space above the nipple, where an arterial pulse is palpable. To locate, lie supine. This is the meeting point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridians. Needle depth: 3 fen; retain for 3 breaths; moxibustion: 5 moxa cones. (From *Tongren*)
