Anterior neck and posterior pharynx: The pharynx (throat for swallowing) is used to swallow food, while the larynx (throat for breathing) is used to receive air. The pharynx connects with the three epigastria to communicate with the stomach, thus serving for swallowing food; the larynx connects with the five zang organs to link with the lungs, thus serving to monitor qi. Qi, larynx, grain, and pharynx refer to these parts. If the fu organs are cold, it will cause the pharyngeal gate to rupture and the voice to become hoarse.
Yi syndrome (dysphagia/choking) is caused by the imbalance of yin and yang, obstruction of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and unfavorable flow of body fluids, leading to qi obstruction and forming Yi syndrome. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, Lung Meridian, Heart Meridian, and Small Intestine Meridian all connect to the throat. For treatment, one should needle according to the affected meridian, which ensures success without failure.
Unilateral tonsillar hypertrophy (Dan E): Acupoint Tianchuang (SI16). Located anterior to the large tendon in the neck, in the depression below the end of the mandible. Deeply insert the needle into the affected side for about 1-2 cun, reaching the corresponding area inside the throat, then immediately withdraw. Subsequently, have the patient swallow saliva; if there is no obstruction, it is miraculous.
Bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy (Shuang E): Needle Tianchuang (SI16), Chize (LU5), Shenmen (HT7), Zusanli (ST36), Taixi (KI3). Also needle Shaoshang (LU11) and three filiform needles arranged in a row behind the root of the thumbnail on the thumb. If the condition is acute, needle twice a day for miraculous effect.
Throat not swollen but feeling hot and blocked, drinking liquids regurgitating through the nose, chronic and unhealed: Ren Gu (KI7) and Hegu (LI4). Retain the needles for a long time, then apply reducing method.
Sore throat accompanied by fullness in the chest, hypochondrium, and limbs: Chize (LU5), Taixi (KI3), Shenmen (HT7), Hegu (LI4), Neiguan (PC6), Zhongzhu (TE3), Jiegu (GB39).
The nape belongs to the Stomach Meridian and Gallbladder Meridian. Pain indicates excess syndrome, while itching indicates deficiency syndrome. Physicians should adapt flexibly.
Toothache and cheek pain: Hegu (LI4), Xia Sanli (ST37), Shenmen (HT7), Lieque (LU7), each moxa 7 moxibustion units (zhuang). Longxuan (Extra point) at the crossing pulse above the wrist on the hand side, Lvxi (KI6) at the tip of the medial malleolus on the foot, each moxa 14 zhuang.
Nuchal rigidity (Xiang Qiang): Fengmen (BL12), Jianjing (GB21), Fengchi (GB20), Kunlun (BL60), Tianzhu (BL10), Fengfu (DU16), Jiegu (GB39). Treat according to the detailed meridians involved, and additionally needle Ashi points (painful spots). This method of needling where it hurts is detailed in the section on arm soreness and can be applied universally with miraculous effects.
Teeth are the surplus of bones, and bones are the essence of the kidneys. *Qianjin Fang* states that tooth diseases in ordinary people are mostly caused by overeating during the day and eating late at night.
Upper toothache: Moxa Shousanli (ST37) for 7 zhuang.
Lower toothache: Moxa Hegu (LI4) for 7 zhuang.
Upper and lower toothache: Moxa the tip of the ankle bone above the wrist for 3 zhuang. If not healed, moxa another 7 zhuang. Left-sided pain moxa the right side, right-sided pain moxa the left side, miraculous effect.
Another prescription: Moxa the painful tooth for 7 zhuang. Do not add more moxibustion, otherwise it may lead to osteomyelitis (Fugu Ju). Another method: Take a tile, draw a human mouth shape on it, and carefully count the total number of the patient's upper and lower teeth. Record them all with an ink pen inside the drawn mouth. Observe which numbered tooth is painful, and moxa the corresponding drawn tooth 21 (3x7) zhuang. It will heal within a few days, miraculous effect.
Dental caries pain: Hegu (LI4), Lieque (LU7), Lidui (ST45), Zhongzhu (TE3), Shenmen (HT7), Xia Sanli (ST37).
Gum decay: Hegu (LI4), Zhongwan (CV12), Xia Sanli (ST37). Needle Chengjiang (CV24) for 7 zhuang, Laogong (PC8) for 1 zhuang.
