Postpartum vomiting of clear fluid caused by liver injury due to anger or crying can be cured by drinking freshly squeezed juice from Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) mixed with a small amount of ginger juice.
This hiccups (hiccough) occurs when Qi rises from the stomach, strikes the cardia, and produces sound. Causes include: deficiency of Stomach Qi; insufficiency of Middle Qi allowing Fire from the Chong and Ren meridians to directly invade the clear pathways and rise upward; excessive water intake leading to water retention and rebellious Qi; blockage of urination and defecation causing lower Jiao obstruction and rising Qi; and exhaustion of Stomach Qi. Generally, postpartum hiccups belong to the syndrome of Stomach deficiency and Cold Qi. Use Jiawei Lizhong Tang (Modified Regulate the Middle Decoction): Taishen (Codonopsis root), Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome), Zhigancao (Prepared licorice root), Paojiang (Prepared ginger), Chenpi (Tangerine peel) each 1 qian; Dingxiang (Clove) 3 qian; Gaoben (not specified in text, likely referring to dried persimmon calyx based on context "Shi Di") 2 qian. If heat signs are present, remove Dingxiang and add Zhuru (Bamboo shavings) 2 qian. If weakness is extreme, food intake decreases, and coughing/hiccups persist, this indicates exhaustion of Stomach Qi and is difficult to treat.
Another prescription: Bai Doukou (Cardamom seed, husked) and Dingxiang (Clove) each 5 fen, ground into powder, taken with decoction of Tao Ren (Peach kernel). It will cure after several doses. Contraindicated for those with heat signs.
Postpartum cough is often caused by lochia attacking upwards and entering the Lung meridian. Symptoms include distension and stuffiness in the chest and diaphragm. Suitable to take Ermu Tang (Two Mother Decoction): Zhimu (Anemarrhena rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria bulb), Yunling (Poria cocos), Dangshen (Codonopsis root), Xingren (Apricot seed), Tao Ren (Peach kernel) each 1 qian. Decoct in water and take warm after meals.
Furthermore, the Lung governs Qi and resides superiorly as Wei (Defensive) Qi, responsible for nourishing the skin and hair and securing the interstices. Postpartum Qi deficiency and weak Wei Qi result in insufficient nourishment of the skin and loose interstices. Wind-Cold invades, first entering the Lung, also causing cough. Symptoms include fever and aversion to cold, nasal congestion with heavy voice, frequent sneezing, and runny clear nasal discharge. Use Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction): Xuanfuhua (Inula flower), Chishao (Red peony root), Qianhu (Peucedanum root), Banxia (Pinellia tuber), Jiesui (Saposhnikovia root), Gancao (Licorice root), Xingren (Apricot seed), Fuling (Poria) each 1 qian; Mahuang (Ephedra stem, roots and joints removed), Wuweizi (Schisandra fruit), Gancao (Licorice root) [dosage implied as per previous herbs or standard], decoct and take as before. Alternatively, using any of the cough prescriptions from Volume III yields better results. If salt is consumed too early postpartum, it is difficult to treat.
Excessive blood loss postpartum leads to sudden depletion of Ying (Nutritive) Blood. Wei (Defensive) Qi loses its master and gathers exclusively in the Lungs, causing panting/asthma. This is named "Lone Yang and Absolute Yin," which is extremely difficult to treat. Urgently heat a shoe sole and moxa/moxibustion-style iron it over the upper and lower abdomen. Then use Duoming Dan (Life-Stealing Pill): Shufuzi (Prepared Aconite lateral root) 5 qian, Danpi (Moutan bark), Ganqizha (Dry lacquer residue, stir-fried until smoke ceases) each 1 qian...
