Zouma Houfeng (Running Horse Throat Wind), Suo Hou Feng (Locking Throat Wind), Zouma Yagan (Running Horse Gum Gangrene), and Chan Hou Feng (Coiling Throat Wind). These are all perilous conditions. If the patient presents with neither vomiting nor diarrhea, bleeding does not occur upon acupuncture, and medicines cannot be ingested, they are considered incurable. Exercise extreme caution.
Tongue retraction, scrotal contraction, opisthotonos (body bent backward like a bow), oily sweat in beads, ten fingers lacking blood color, hoarseness accompanied by choking on food, dry throat without phlegm, hemoptysis with throat tinea, deep and fine pulse in all six positions, voice resembling sawing, constipation for ten days, nasal flaring with cyanotic lips, collapse of the Tianzhu bone (neck weakness), fine pulse with cool body, fixed staring eyes, excessive phlegm obstructing qi flow—these conditions, collectively referred to as Houjun (Throat Tumor or Severe Ulcer), are incurable.
In general, when examining the pulse, four to five beats per respiration cycle indicate a peaceful pulse. Three beats per cycle is a Slow Pulse (Chi Mai), and six beats per cycle is a Rapid Pulse (Shu Mai); these are pathological pulses.
A slow pulse indicates cold; a rapid pulse indicates heat; a fine and moderate pulse indicates deficiency-cold; a fine and rapid pulse indicates deficiency-heat. This is the principle governing the six pulses.
(For treating diseases, needle the following six acupoints)
Head and Face: Jiache (ST6), located 8 fen below the earlobe, belongs to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
Right Hand: Shaoshang (LU11), located at the radial corner of the nail of the thumb, belongs to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian; Zhongchong (PC9), located at the radial corner of the nail of the middle finger, belongs to the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian; Shaochong (HT9), located at the radial corner of the nail of the little finger, belongs to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian.
Left Hand: Shangyang (LI1), located at the radial corner of the nail of the index finger, belongs to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; Guanchong (TE1), located at the ulnar corner of the nail of the ring finger, belongs to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian.
(Twenty-two conditions are currently recorded.)
Houbi (Sore Throat): Depressed fire attacking leads to Houbi formation, sometimes producing small, chess-piece-shaped swellings on either side of the throat. Bright red, wine-toxin-like luster resembling a mirror, swelling in the throat due to prevailing wind-heat. The symptoms present as small and round shapes; in the early stage, dissipation or pricking is acceptable. However, if the color is purple-red, flat, and glossy like a mirror, pricking is contraindicated; internal resolution is preferred because the toxin originates from the root source.
Houbi (Throat Closure): Accumulated heat and wind-phlegm cause throat closure, resulting in blood blisters forming in the throat. Sudden obstruction feels like a cherry; pricking to release saliva and blood brings relief. This condition requires releasing the exterior and clearing heat. First, prick with a needle, then apply powder medicines Zi and Chou.
Chan Hou Feng (Coiling Throat Wind): Aversion to cold and pain characterizes Yin Toxin. There is no visible external or internal form, but shortness of breath occurs. Redness and swelling on the chest with coldness in the feet; if red threads are seen, acupuncture is precious. Medicines should release the exterior; powder medicine Si should be applied first. If red threads are seen, cut them immediately, then use medicine Zi.
Qiang Hou Feng (Choking Throat Wind): This condition is called Feisi Toxin. Blisters form in the mouth, covered by medicine Chou. Extreme dryness and point-phlegm heat reside in the Heart; sudden choking on food is ominous. Prick the blood blister with a needle, apply medicine Chou afterwards, and simultaneously blow medicine Zi. Decoctions should clear heat and resolve phlegm.
Ya Hou Feng (Mute Throat Wind): Ya Zhang Throat Wind invades the pharynx and diaphragm; inability to speak and locked jaw characterize it. Purple face, clear lips, cold runny nose; dispersing wind and descending phlegm removes the disaster. The jaw is tightly closed; apply medicine Si first, then Shen, wiping front and back until wind and phlegm are completely eliminated. Decoctions should first release the exterior, then clear heat.
Nong She Hou Feng (Playing Tongue Throat Wind): Body fever and oral swelling; the tongue protrudes frequently while being manipulated by both hands. Use a pen-needle at the affected area to remove phlegm-saliva, detoxify, disperse wind, and clear heat stagnation. Prick Shaoshong (LU11) with a three-edged needle, apply medicine Si first, then medicine Zi.
Lan Hou Feng (Rotting Throat Wind): Frequent fever characterizes Lan Hou Feng; lips look like vermilion, and the oral cavity cracks. Assess the depth of the lesion; medicines Zi and Chou should be used together for regulation. Mix medicines Zi and Chou evenly and apply, then use medicine Si to conclude. Decoctions should clear heat.
Dan Ru E (Single Tonsil): Swelling inside the throat resembles plum or peach fruits; unilateral tonsillar shape is named Dan Ru E. Early treatment allows rapid regression; resolving phlegm and dissipating toxins leads to natural peace. Whether formed or unformed, this condition can be pricked. If large and elongated, use medicine Si initially, then medicines Zi and Chou to conclude. Decoctions should first release the exterior, then clear heat.
Hou Yong (Throat Abscess): Seven emotions and depression lead to abscess formation; pus can be pricked within six days. Untreated, it risks becoming a cold abscess; medicines Si and Shen will ensure recovery. The lesion is located in the center posterior to the throat's junction; pricking is suitable after four to five days to prevent recurrence from early pricking. Before pricking and before ulceration, apply powder medicine Si first, then Shen. After ulceration, use medicines Zi and Chou. Decoctions should first release the exterior, then clear heat.
Ya Ding (Gum Carbuncle): Taiyin Spleen Earth and Foot-Yangming Stomach; dual fire attack causes Ding. The lesion is on the gums, bean-sized; pricking with multiple needles brings peace. Apply medicine Shen first, then medicine Zi.
Ya Xuan (Gum Recession): This condition arises from stomach heat, causing congestion, recession, and frequent bleeding. Powder medicines You and Wei can eliminate it; stomach-clearing decoctions achieve swift results. Apply medicine Zi first, then medicines You and Wei to stop bleeding. Decoctions should clear stomach fire.
Mu She (Wooden Tongue): Tongue disease caused by wind-heat invading the Heart Meridian; sudden swelling and rupture make speech difficult. Both sides should be needled; use Zhi and Lian to extinguish fire. Blow medicine Shen; observe purple areas, puncture with a small knife to bleed, then apply medicine Zi.
Chong She (Double Tongue): Observe the Lotus condition; three tongues gather at the base of the tongue. Frequently apply medicine Xu, supplement with points; clear heart and purge fire without delay. Blow medicine Shen; if unresolved, use medicine Xu. The above three conditions require decoctions that clear heat and detoxify.
Chong [She/Gan]: Although the body is not hot, there is only Heart labor; growth on the tongue resembles a small peach. Use Huanglian Jiedu Yin (Coptis Detoxification Decoction); blowing should use Bingpian (Borneol) without knives. Apply medicine Zi by blowing.
Zouma Yagan (Running Horse Gum Gangrene): Pediatric Gan syndrome belongs to the Spleen; black rot spreading with foul odor is unfavorable. Combine medicines Zi and Chou with Mao; penetrating cheeks and falling teeth are difficult to treat. First wash with rice water or warm water; mix medicines Zi and Chou evenly and apply. If ineffective, it is a critical condition. Use Jiedu San (Detoxification Powder) for decoction.
Sha Dou Kou Gan (Measles/Smallpox Oral Gangrene): Gangrene forms in the mouth after measles/smallpox remnants; rotting in the gums transmits smallpox toxin. If rashes fill the mouth, consult the Heart and Stomach meridians. Blow medicines Zi, Chou, and Mao; decoctions should purge Heart and Stomach fires.
Shuang Ru E (Double Tonsils): Double tonsils grow pairwise in the throat; mild cases above the Guan position, difficult below. Blowing air resembles red plums; mild cases dissolve, heavy cases require pricking to remove wind-phlegm. Shape is similar to single tonsils; pricking applies regardless of formation state. First blow medicine Si; if unresolved, dot medicine Zi. Decoctions should first release the exterior, then clear heat.
Ma Huang Ding (Leech Carbuncle): Painful and slightly white Leech Carbuncle; grows in leek-shape on [the lesion]. Internal swelling absent but chills and fever occur; rapid acupuncture brings natural peace. Use medicine Shen to remove bad blood, then apply medicine Zi. Decoctions: if exterior signs exist, release the exterior; if not, clear heat and purge fire.
Lian Zhu Feng (String of Pearls Wind): Lesions in deep crevices resemble string of pearls; early stage spreads with white residue; long-term develops into eight or nine dots. Medicine mixing Zi and Chou eliminates the disease. Mix medicines Zi, Chou, and Si evenly and blow; additionally apply medicine Yin. Decoctions should clear heat and detoxify.
Yin Xu Hou Feng (Yin Deficiency Throat Wind): Tinea originally caused by lung damage; spots and mossy tinea resemble shrimp skin. Frequent fever and coughing; red face and hoarse voice indicate danger. The condition is weak; exterior-releasing is unsuitable. Nourishment combined with detoxification is required. Severe pain in the first half of the lunar month indicates Qi deficiency; severe pain in the second half indicates Blood deficiency. Blow medicine Mao, and apply medicines Chou and You. If unchanged over time, it is incurable.
Yang Mei Xian Hou (Syphilitic Tinea Throat): Syphilitic toxin generates tinea; white patches emit foul odor in the throat. Treatment is possible only when white turns yellow; follow You with Zi and Chou. Mix medicines Zi and Chou evenly and blow in, then use medicine You to conclude. Decoctions should detoxify.
Qie Ya Feng (Teeth-Gnashing Wind): Qie Ya is equivalent to Suo Hou Feng; toxin attacks gums via stomach fire. Untreated, it may become a dental fistula. Open the lock using Chen medicine, conclude with Zi; first rub Chen medicine into gum seams. If swelling persists, use medicine Zi. Decoctions should clear heat and detoxify.
