咽喉门五:白色喉风。
Throat Section 1: Curtain Pearl Throat (Lianzhu Hou).
Curtain Pearl Throat presents with the entire throat covered in a white, fine net-like pattern, slight swelling on both sides, white spots at the root tinged with red, redness and swelling of the uvula, and severe pain when swallowing water. This condition arises from accumulated heat-toxin. The pulse is floating and surging at both Cun positions, and rapid, large, and surging at both Chi positions. This is a syndrome of excess above and deficiency below; clearing fire is indicated. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Salt-fried Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), 2 qian; Wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Salt-fried Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), 2 qian; Shu Shigao (Prepared Gypsum Fibrosum), 5 qian; Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), 2 qian; Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 2 qian; Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), 1 qian; Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian; Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian. Take one dose. The next day, add Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), 3 qian; Zihuadiding (Viola Herba cum Radice), 3 qian; Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 2 qian; Caoheche (Chloranthi Spicati Herba), 2 qian; Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), 1 qian. Mix with one cup of Jinzhi (Gold Juice) or decocted Baizhi juice (Cupressi Ramulus et Folium Juice) and take orally for best results. External powder insufflation can cure it within six to seven days.
Choking and Hoarse Throat (Qiangshi Yahou). This condition is caused by latent pathogens in the Lung, resulting in hoarseness and choking while eating. The six pulses are slow and fine, indicating a Yin syndrome. I once treated a twenty-year-old who suffered from this for three years, with reduced food intake and the illness approaching a critical state. After repeated examinations, although the disease was chronic, the pulse still had a strong root, suggesting it might be treatable. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), 2 qian; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), 1 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 3 qian; Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 2 qian; Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), 1 qian; Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), 2 qian; Zaohe (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), 3 qian; Jiangchao Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine), 2 qian. Take continuously for five to six days. Although the illness receded, the hoarseness remained. Switch to adding Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), 1 liang; Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), 7 qian; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 7 qian; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), 1 qian (all above stir-fried with urine of a young boy). Add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), 1 qian. Boil briefly, gargle slowly, and swallow gradually. Ten doses will cure it. Afterwards, use tonifying herbs to strengthen the Spleen.
Throat Section 3: Internal and External Swollen Throat (Neiwai Zhonghou).
Internal and External Swollen Throat occurs below the throat gate, where Yin and Yang bind, causing swelling internally and externally, possibly accompanied by ulcerated spots due to fire stagnation. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Chao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 3 qian; Shu Jun (Prepared Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 5 qian; Haifushi (Pumex), 2 qian. For external powder insufflation, the next day switch to adding Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 1.5 qian; Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian; Jiuchao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), 3 qian; Chao Shanzhi (Stir-fried Gardeniae Fructus), 1 qian; Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian. Immediately needle the Shaoshang (LU 11) and Shangyang (LI 1) acupoints on both hands (four points total). If there is back cold, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix); if there is stomach reflux, add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Baizhi juice, which can also be used for gargling.
Throat Section 4: Wind-Heat Throat (Fengre Hou).
Wind-Heat Throat arises from contracting wind-heat, presenting with fine red spots covering the throat, roots tinged pale white, three or four patches under both sides of the tongue, and surging and tight six pulses. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 2 qian; Wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 3 qian; Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), 1 qian; Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 1 qian. One dose can cure it. Use external powder insufflation and concurrently take Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder).
Throat Section 5: Purple Deficient Throat (Zise Xu Hou).
Purple Deficient Throat presents with purple-red color in the throat, which over time becomes ulcerated like raw lacquer. This is because cold-cooling medicines were taken at the onset. This condition involves latent cold in the Lung and Stomach; it is flat without swelling, making eating difficult, and vomiting may produce rotting flesh. It requires urgent treatment. If mistakenly diagnosed as a heat-fire syndrome and treated with Sanhuang (Three-Yellow Decoction), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), etc., it will become fatal. When I see such purple conditions, regardless of name or color, if the throat shows no distinct shape but is entirely purple, with a slow pulse and cool body, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 5 fen; Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 1 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 1 qian; Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), 1 qian each. After taking, the purple turns red. Switch to adding Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 2 qian; Wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 2 qian. It will then heal.
Throat Section 6: Throat Tinea (Houxuan).
Throat Tinea is caused by Kidney deficiency with hyperactive fire, manifesting as tinea in the throat. It is not swollen but slightly red, with spots on top varying in blue-white color, sized like mustard seeds or pinholes/mung beans. Each spot has prickles, causing severe pain when water touches it. There is hoarseness in the throat, coughing without phlegm, and fine, rapid six pulses. Use Zhibai Dihuang Tang (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill Decoction) combined with Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction), added with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Chao Yuanshen (Stir-fried Scrophulariae Radix), Yan Chao Nvzhenzi (Salt-fried Ligustrum Lucidi Fructus), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Yangshen (American Ginseng Radix) (either decocted separately or made into pills), Shouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), and Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), 2 qian each. After ten doses, use Gui Fu Bawei Wan (Cinnamon and Aconite Eight-Ingredient Pill) added with Nvzhenzi (Ligustrum Lucidi Fructus), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), and Er Shen (Two Ginsengs) (all salt-fried), taken with light salt soup.
Throat Section 7: Throat Chancre (Hougan).
Throat Chancre is caused by Kidney deficiency with hyperactive fire boiling upwards to affect the throat. There are blue-white-red spots on top, flat without prickles, hence named Throat Chancre. The voice is not hoarse, there is no cough, and the two Chi pulses are deficient. First, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction), removing Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Can (Bombyx Batryticatus). Add Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 1 qian; Wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 2 qian; Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian; Salt-fried Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), 1 qian; Salt-fried Nvzhenzi (Ligustrum Lucidi Fructus) mixed with water and stir-fried, 1.5 qian; Salt-fried Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), 1.5 qian. Males add Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), 5 qian; females add Biejia (Trionycis Carapax), 5 qian. Take five or ten doses. If not cured, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), 3 fen each, decocted separately and added to the medicine, taken cold. After healing, combine with Gui Fu Bawei Wan (Cinnamon and Aconite Eight-Ingredient Pill) added with Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Nvzhenzi (Ligustrum Lucidi Fructus), and Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) (all herbs salt-fried). One course can cure it. Use external powder insufflation.
Throat Section 8: Flying Throat (Feiyang Hou).
Flying Throat is caused by wind-heat obstructing upwards, with upper redness and swelling, inability to pass air, and difficulty swallowing. It flies from the uvula filling the mouth. This is a malignant condition. Urgently bleed the affected area to release qi and apply powder. Internally, take Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian each; Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), 4 qian. One or two doses can cure it.
Throat Section 9: Deficient Hoarse Throat (Xu Yahou).
Deficient Hoarse Throat presents without swelling in the throat, few red spots inside the sides/gates, unclear hoarse voice, and locked jaw. This condition is due to internal and external wind-fire, caused by a preference for sour and astringent foods leading to unclear Lung qi. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 3 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 2 qian. After one dose, the voice clears. Switch to adding Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) and Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 2 qian each; Salt-water fried Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 1 qian each. Two doses will cure it.
Throat Section 10: Hoarse Throat (Shengyahou).
Hoarse Throat is caused by cold latent in the Lung and Stomach. It is not swollen or red, nor are there ulcerated spots, only dryness and pain, making eating difficult. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium) and Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), 2 qian each; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 5 fen. After two doses, halve the Mahuang and Ziye. Two days later, switch to adding Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Jiangchao Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine), 1 qian each; Zaohe (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), 20 grains; Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), 2 qian; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 5 qian each (the last three stir-fried with urine of a young boy). Four or five doses...
Throat Section 11: Ulcerated Sand Throat (Lansha Hou).
Ulcerated Sand Throat develops after Taiyang disease (Cold Damage), where exterior pathogens remain unresolved, causing swelling and ulceration inside the throat gate. The Right Guan pulse is urgent, indicating a Lung pathology. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Jiuchao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix), 1 qian; Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 1 qian; Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 2 qian; Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 1 qian; Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), 2.5 qian; Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba), 2 qian; Caoheche (Chloranthi Spicati Herba), 2 qian. Take continuously for four doses. If ulcerated spots do not recede, add Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 3 qian. Take Jin Hua Baxian San (Jinhua Baxian San) and Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill), 5 fen per dose. Three doses will achieve success.
Tonsil Section 1: Bilateral Tonsillar Hypertrophy (Shuang Ru'e).
Bilateral Tonsillar Hypertrophy affects the Stomach and Lung meridians, appearing on both sides above the gate, cherry-sized, indicating a Lung-Stomach condition. The body has chills and fever, and the six pulses are wiry and rapid. First needle Shaoshang (LU 11) and Shangyang (LI 1) on both hands (four points), or pricking the affected area to bleed is also effective. First, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Haifushi (Pumex), Ziye (Perillae Folium), and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 1.5 qian each. Two doses can cure it. If swelling persists and the six pulses are forceful, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 3 qian.
Tonsil Section 2: Unilateral Tonsillar Hypertrophy (Dan Ru'e).
Unilateral Tonsillar Hypertrophy appears beside the bilateral tonsils, either left or right. The six pulses are floating and rapid. It is caused by unresolved pathogens after Cold Damage, with body heat, nausea, and fear of seeing sand-rash. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 2 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 1 qian; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 2 qian; Xian Yuanxu (Fresh Coriandri Fructus), 5 qian (use seeds, 3 qian, if fresh is unavailable). One dose reduces symptoms by half. The next day, add Jiuchao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 2 qian; Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian each. It will then heal.
Tonsil Section 3: Ulcerated Tonsillar Hypertrophy (Lan Ru'e).
Ulcerated Tonsillar Hypertrophy is caused by stagnant heat in the Lung and Stomach, presenting with red swelling, ulcerated spots, severe pain, and difficulty eating. The six pulses are wiry and tight. Urgently needle Shaoshang (LU 11) and Shangyang (LI 1) on both hands (four points). Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 2 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium) and Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 1 qian each; Chao Huangqin (Stir-fried Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian. Mix with one cup of Baizhi juice (Cupressi Ramulus et Folium Juice), gargle the throat, and swallow slowly. Then take one dose of Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder), taken with Jinhua (dissolved in water). The next day, remove Ziye and Gegen, add Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Haifushi (Pumex), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 2 qian each. If the pulse is large and forceful, add Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 3 qian. If the pulse is deficient, use Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder) with Baizhi juice (Cupressi Ramulus et Folium Juice) as before. It will heal in three to four days. If there is hoarseness and back cold, treat with Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 3 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 1 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 3 fen.
Tonsil Section 4: Wind-Cold Tonsil (Fenghan E).
Wind-Cold Tonsil arises from wind-cold, swelling like a plum. The head cannot look down, qi is blocked, and the Cun and Guan pulses are floating and tight, indicating a Lung-Stomach condition. Immediately needle Shaoshang (LU 11), Shangyang (LI 1), and Shaochong (HT 9) on both hands (six points). Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium), 3 qian; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 1 qian. One dose can cure it. If cooling medicines are used early, it will not recede.
Tonsil Section 5: White Tonsillar Hypertrophy (Baise Ru'e).
White Tonsillar Hypertrophy blocks the mouth with swelling, accompanied by chills and fever, and floating-wiry six pulses. It is caused by the Lung contracting wind-cold. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium), 2 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 3 fen; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 2 qian. One dose can cure it.
Tonsil Section 6: Stone Tonsil (Shi E).
Stone Tonsil is caused by congenital insufficiency of the original essence, appearing in the tonsil position, extending half an inch inward. At onset, cooling medicines must not be used, nor needles or knives. This is old phlegm formed from abdominal fire into evil blood, flaring up upon exertion. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian; Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Niubang (Arctii Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian each. Take four or five doses. If it does not recede, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 1.5 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 1 qian; Xiang Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), 2 qian; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Niubang (Arctii Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), 1 qian each; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), 8 fen; Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 6 fen; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), 2 qian; Dengxin (Junci Medulla), 2 fen. Take until healed. Use external powder to reduce swelling.
Tonsil Section 7: Latent Cold Throat Tonsil (Fuhan Hou'e).
Latent Cold Throat Tonsil: All latent cold conditions have a purple color; the treatment is the same as in the Purple Throat Carbuncle section. For pregnant women with throat carbuncles, concerned about medication affecting the fetus, decoct the medicine thickly, gargle, and spit out; this can also cure it.
Bi Syndrome Section 1: Ulcerated Bi Syndrome (Lan Hou Bi).
Ulcerated Bi Syndrome is caused by Liver-Stomach heat-toxin and external contraction of seasonal pathogens. It resembles flower petals, with ulcerated swelling, white spots, painful screaming, refusal to eat, upward rolling of eyes, and surging-large six pulses. Quickly needle Shaoshang (LU 11), Shangyang (LI 1), Guanchong (SJ 1), and Shaochong (HT 9) on both hands. Bleeding indicates life; no bleeding indicates death. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 1 qian; Yan Chao Huangqin (Salt-fried Scutellariae Radix, add a little wine), 2 qian; Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 2 qian; Yan Chao Shengdi (Salt-fried Raw Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 2 qian; Haifushi (Pumex), 2 qian; Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, processed with branch juice), 2 qian. Four doses can cure it. Also take Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder), dissolved in water. If the pulse is fine and the body is cool, this condition is untreatable.
Bi Syndrome Section 2: White Bi Syndrome (Baise Hou Bi).
White Bi Syndrome is caused by the Lung and Stomach contracting cold, with a slow pulse and body heat. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 3 fen; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 2 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), 1 qian each. Two doses can cure it. If it turns red with dry pain, remove the previous four herbs and switch to adding Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Jiuchao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), 1 qian each. If there is much phlegm, add Haifushi (Pumex), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 1 qian each.
Bi Syndrome Section 3: Cold-Latent Bi Syndrome (Hanfu Hou Bi).
Cold-Latent Bi Syndrome presents with a slow Lung meridian pulse, severe cold, purple color, and little swelling. If cooling agents are mistakenly taken, it will eventually ulcerate. For all purple cases, do not treat as fire. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 5 fen; Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Ziye (Perillae Folium), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), and Niubang (Arctii Fructus), 1 qian each. In severe cases, vomiting purple blood clots occurs; the treatment is the same. For non-ulcerated cases, add Ziye (Perillae Folium), 2 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 5 fen; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Haifushi (Pumex), 1 qian each. Treat swelling and non-swelling similarly.
Bi Syndrome Section 4: Bilateral Bi Syndrome (Shuang Hou Bi).
Bilateral Bi Syndrome appears on both sides inside the upper gate, shaped like olive pits, painful and difficult to eat, caused by accumulated heat in the Stomach meridian. It may present with chills and fever, and surging-large pulses at both Guan positions. Quickly needle the affected area, or Shaoshang (LU 11) is also acceptable. First, take one dose of Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction). The next day, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Chao Yuanshen (Stir-fried Scrophulariae Radix), 1.5 qian each. One dose can reduce it. Do not needle ulcerated cases; only use powder insufflation on the affected area.
Bi Syndrome Section 5: Unilateral Bi Syndrome (Dan Hou Bi).
Unilateral Bi Syndrome, either left or right, is treated the same as Bilateral Bi Syndrome.
Bi Syndrome Section 6: Pale Red Bi Syndrome (Danhong Hou Bi).
Pale Red Bi Syndrome swells like an egg, preventing eating, accompanied by chills and fever, red eyes, and vomiting, fearing internal macule toxin. Urgently needle Shaoshang (LU 11), Shangyang (LI 1), Guanchong (SJ 1), and Shaochong (HT 9) on both sides (eight points), or prick the affected area. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 2 qian each; Xian Wusu (Fresh Coriandri Herba), 5 qian. One dose causes macules/rash to erupt all over the body, and vomiting stops. If body heat persists and the outside of the throat swells, this is internal fire venting outward. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) switched to adding Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 3 qian; Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 2 qian each; Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), 5 qian; Huashi (Talcum), 2 qian. After two doses, remove Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and take four or five more doses to heal. If there are ulcerated spots, take one dose of Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder), dissolved in water, and concurrently drink Baizhi juice (Cupressi Ramulus et Folium Juice). This condition is due to unresolved Cold Damage seasonal pathogens, with deep-fine pulses at both Guan positions and deficient-rapid pulses at the two Cun and two Chi positions.
Bi Syndrome Section 7: Running Horse Bi Syndrome (Zouma Hou Bi).
Running Horse Bi Syndrome presents with internal and external swelling. This is an acute condition where Liver-Spleen fire closes and blocks, causing Bi syndrome. It may present with chills and fever. Surging-large pulses indicate life; deep-fine pulses indicate death. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), 2 qian; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), 1 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 5 fen, for gargling. Add Jiaoci (Spina Gleditsiae Sinensis? Note: likely Ciatoji/Costus Root or similar thorny herb, context suggests dispersing), 2 qian; Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail), 2 qian; Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), 2 qian; Caoheche (Chloranthi Spicati Herba), 2 qian; Sheng Jun (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 5 qian. If phlegm increases, add Fuhai Shi (Floating Pumice), 3 qian; Zhi Banxia (Prepared Pinelliae Rhizoma), 2 qian. If there is body heat and back cold, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 1 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 1 qian. Urgently prick Shaoshang (LU 11), Shangyang (LI 1), and Guanchong (SJ 1) on both hands (six points) until significant bleeding occurs.
Wind Section 1: Internal Swollen Lock-Throat Wind (Neizhong Suohou Feng).
Internal Swollen Lock-Throat Wind is caused by the binding of Yin and Yang in the Lung and Stomach meridians, blocking internally without external signs, with much phlegm and wheezing in the throat. Treatment methods include the pouring and vomiting method seen in the Wrapping Throat Wind section below. Additionally, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), 2 qian; Sheng Jun (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 5 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 1 qian; Ziye (Perillae Folium), 2 qian; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), 1 qian; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 2 qian. Boil briefly and take. Vomiting or purging is ideal. If no vomiting or purging occurs, needle Shaoshang (LU 11), Shangyang (LI 1), Guanchong (SJ 1), Quchi (LI 11), and Hegu (LI 4) on both sides (ten points). Bleeding indicates life; no bleeding indicates death. Wiry-tight-surging-large pulses at the left/right Guan and Cun positions indicate life; deep-slow pulses indicate death. Use powder to draw out phlegm. Quchi (LI 11) is at the head of the transverse crease of the elbow, on the lateral side of the arm. Hegu (LI 4) is on the dorsum of the hand, at the junction of the thumb and index finger.
Wind Section 2: Wrapping Throat Wind (Chan Hou Feng).
Wrapping Throat Wind is caused by the Lung contracting seasonal pathogens, with wind-phlegm obstructing upwards, Yin-Yang closing, and blockage internally and externally. It feels like being tightly wrapped by a snake, with obstruction below the gate. In severe cases, there is opisthotonos and locked jaw. First, use opening drugs insufflated into the nose and rubbed on the teeth until vomiting occurs. Then quickly needle Jiache (ST 6) on both sides and moxa several moxibustions. Alternatively, mix egg white with Bai Fan (Alumen) and administer. If the above methods do not cause vomiting, needle Shaoshang (LU 11), Shangyang (LI 1), Guanchong (SJ 1), Shaochong (HT 9), and Shaoyin (KI 1? Note: Text says Shaoyin, likely referring to a specific point or typo for Shaofu/Shaohai, but sticking to text "Shaoyin") five points, stopping when bleeding occurs. No bleeding means untreatable. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Sheng Jun (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 1 liang; Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ziye (Perillae Folium), and Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), 2 qian each. Decoct and administer, or induce vomiting/purging. If no vomiting, needle immediately. If needling yields no blood and the six pulses are deep-fine, it is untreatable. Use Danfan (Chalcanthite) powder to remove phlegm.
Wind Section 3: Tongue-Encircling Throat Wind (Zashe Hou Feng).
Tongue-Encircling Throat Wind appears on both sides above and below the throat, pressing against the uvula, with blisters that are red or tense. The face is swollen externally, but the throat interior is not swollen; the tongue curls and is coarse. This is a malignant condition with few recoveries. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), 1 qian; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Sheng Jun (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), 4 qian; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), 2 qian. Rush to take three or four doses, and there may be a chance of survival. If the jaw is black and swollen, teeth fall out, and the head shakes, it is untreatable. This condition is caused by accumulation in the Lung and Liver.
Wind Section 4: Deficient Ulcerated Throat Wind (Xulan Hou Feng).
Deficient Ulcerated Throat Wind is caused by insufficiency of the original essence, with deficient fire flaming upward, appearing above and below the throat gate. It presents with red and white spots, painful ulceration without swelling, and fine-rapid six pulses. At onset, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Salt-fried Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), 2 qian; Wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 2 qian; Stir-fried Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 1 qian each; Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 3 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 2 qian. After two doses, stop Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) and add Salt-fried Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), 1 qian each. Take five doses. If the two Guan pulses become large, treat as a knot-toxin using the medications listed in the Stomach Heat-Toxin section. Use external powder insufflation and take Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder).
Throat Section 5: White Throat Wind (Baise Hou Feng).
