During the summer and autumn seasons, dysentery (dysentery) is most prevalent. This disease often arises from summer heat (summer heat), filth (filth), and food stagnation (food stagnation). Radish (Radish) is most suitable for treating it. It is essential to place the radish, including roots and leaves, on the roof on the day of Winter Solstice (Winter Solstice), allowing it to be exposed to wind, rain, frost, snow, and sunlight until Qingming Festival (Qingming Festival), when it should be collected. The interior becomes loose like a tuft, named "Radish Tuft" (Radish Tuft). Its nature can clear summer heat and eliminate stagnation. Furthermore, through exposure to rain, snow, sun, and the alternating steaming of cold and heat, it absorbs the pure qi of heaven, thereby resolving turbid pathogens in the intestines and stomach. Whether red or white dysentery, it yields extremely effective results. However, wealthy families disdain its cheapness and discard it without use, which is a pity! Who would know that although the item is inexpensive, its efficacy is miraculous. If prepared and distributed, the merit would be boundless. Since this resource is extremely cheap, anyone with a compassionate heart can prepare and distribute it. I hope physicians will widely disseminate this method, as it is one way to benefit society.
There are many types of phlegm diseases in humans. The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) contains not a single character for "phlegm." The *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) lists phlegm-fluid retention and cough together in one category, leading later generations to treat phlegm diseases exclusively by focusing on the Lung. They do not realize that ancient masters considered the Kidney (Kidney) as the root of phlegm production and the Stomach (Stomach) as the vessel storing phlegm. This reasoning is indeed profound. Generally, the Kidney governs the five fluids (five fluids); when entering the Lung, they become nasal mucus. Phlegm and nasal mucus are both transformations of body fluids (body fluids), which originate from the Stomach as the destination of grain and water essence. Through refining qi and preserving essence, they transform into body fluids, ascending to the Lung and descending to the Spleen (Spleen), thus circulating with the movement of qi. Phlegm travels throughout the limbs and head via qi, reaching everywhere. Therefore, both internal injuries (internal injury) and external infections (external infection) can generate phlegm. For phlegm caused by external infections, if due to cold, use warming methods; if due to fire/heat, use clearing methods. For phlegm caused by internal injuries, if deficiency, use tonification; if excess, use purgation. If phlegm obstructs the upper jiao, induce vomiting; if phlegm stagnates in the lower jiao, use purgation. This is the general principle. If phlegm arises from Wind pathogen (Wind), use light agents to release the exterior. Wind is a yang pathogen, entering from the skin pores into the interstices, gradually reaching the Lung and Stomach, inevitably preventing the essence of grain and water from ascending. Due to constraint, it transforms into phlegm and should still be expectorated from the Lung orifices. Since the Lung is located highest, light agents are appropriate. When wind pathogen invades internally, treat with acrid-cool substances, assisted by bitter-sweet ones. Wu Jutong's Yin Qiao San (Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder) and Sang Ju Yin (Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction) are examples. If wind transforms into heat, and heat steams stomach fluids into phlegm, assist with stomach-clearing herbs such as Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen, 花粉), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), and Bambusae Folium (Zhuye, 竹叶). If cold pathogen generates phlegm, pores close and reject the pathogen, Lung qi becomes rebellious and full, and Taiyang qi cannot vent externally. Use Xing Su San (Apricot and Perilla Powder) or Mahuang Xingren Gancao Shigao Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Seed, Licorice, and Gypsum Decoction). If heat is severe, assist with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Mori Cortex (Sangpi, 桑皮), and Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi, 山栀). If summer-heat pathogen is inhaled through mouth and nose, moving directly to the middle pathway and entering the Stomach, accumulating into heat-phlegm, use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) or Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) to vent heat. If dampness stagnates in the middle, causing Spleen and Stomach dysfunction in ascending and descending, leading to phlegm obstruction, it is necessary to move the Spleen and clear the Stomach. To move the Spleen, use Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo, 厚朴), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 干姜), Tugua Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Fupi, 腹皮), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha, 山楂), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), Agastaches Herba (Huoxiang, 藿香), Cardamomi Fructus (Doukou, 豆蔻), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 橘皮). To clear the Stomach, use Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru, 竹茹), Scutellariae Radix, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), and Trichosanthis Radix. Or add diuretic and leaching agents. If dampness transforms into heat syndrome, use damp-resolving and heat-clearing methods, such as Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏), Sojae Semen Praeparatum (Douchi/Doujuan, 豆卷), Tongcao (Tongcao, 通草), and Talcum (Huashi, 滑石). See detailed discussions in Wu Jutong's *Wenbing Tiaobian* (Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases) and Xue Le's *Shire Bing Pian* (Treatise on Damp-Heat Diseases). If Autumn Dryness (Dryness) damages the lungs and stomach fluids, generating phlegm, nourish Lung and Stomach yin. Yu Jiayan advocated Qingzao Jiufei Tang (Clear Dryness and Rescue the Lung Decoction). Or assist with Wuzhi Yin (Five Juice Drink), using sweet-cool yin-nourishing and dryness-moistening agents. Xue Geng Tang (Snow Broth) is also of this type. Among the six exogenous pathogens, Fire (Fire) most easily generates phlegm. Fire has distinctions between Ministerial Fire (Ministerial Fire) and Sovereign Fire (Sovereign Fire), and among the Five Emotions (Five Emotions). Treat Liver Fire with bitter-draining methods; treat Stomach Fire with bitter-descending methods. Bitter-draining differs from bitter-descending. Bitter-draining includes Gardeniae Fructus, Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 青黛), Gentianae Radix (Longdan, 龙胆), Aloe (Luhui, 芦荟), and Porcine Gallbladder (Zhudan, 猪胆). Bitter-descending includes Rheae Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄), Coptidis Rhizoma, Scutellariae Radix, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex, and Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实). Additionally, phlegm constrained for a long time transforms into fire. Ascending upward, it causes palpitations (palpitations), dizziness (vertigo), gastric discomfort, and insomnia. Entering meridians, it causes pain, paralysis, numbness, and nodules. Entering muscle interstices, it coagulates into carbuncles and sores. Flowing to the lower jiao, it causes flaccidity syndromes, bi-syndromes, crane-knee disease, and bone abscesses. Entering the uterus collateral, it causes phlegm-fainting, epilepsy, dementia, and coma. Generally, for palpitations, dizziness, gastric discomfort, and insomnia, clear fire to treat the Liver, assisted by spirit-calming herbs such as Antelopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao, 羚羊角), Morus Folium (Sangye, 桑叶), Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 丹皮), Gardeniae Fructus, Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng, 钩藤), Calamistratis Spora (Tianzhuhuang, 天竺黄), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao, 连翘), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦冬), Poria Cum Wood (Fushen, 茯神), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 远志), Indigo Naturalis, Ostreae Concha (Muli, 牡蛎), and Hematitum (Shijueming, 石决明). For pain, paralysis, and numbness, use Kongxian Dan (Control Phlegm Pill), Untan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill), Jingli (Arisaema Juice), and Zhuli (Bamboo Juice). Because phlegm resides deeply and cannot be vomited, it must be attacked from below. For carbuncles and sores coagulating in muscle interstices, harmonize Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi), assist with aromatic meridian-penetrating and pore-opening agents such as Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guibai/Gui, 当归), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), Manis Squama (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲), Sinapis Alti Semen (Baijiezi, 白芥子), Persicae Semen (Taoren, 桃仁), Boswelliae Resina (Ruxiang, 乳香), Myrrhae Resina (Moyao, 没药), and Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao, 皂角), attacking blood stasis and guiding dispersion. For flaccidity, bi-syndrome, crane-knee, and bone abscess, use Dahuo Luo Dan (Great Activate Collaterals Pill) or Kongxian Dan. Indeed, phlegm in the lower jiao requires harsh drugs to penetrate. For phlegm-fainting, epilepsy, dementia, and coma, transport phlegm from the uterus collateral. First use Lili Tang (Veratrum Decoction) to induce vomiting. If symptoms are urgent with locked jaws, powder Veratrum and insufflate into the nose to induce vomiting. If vomiting persists excessively, drink scallion soup to resolve it. Next, use Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Clear Heart Pill) or Baijin Wan (White Gold Pill) to clear residual pathogens. Finally, use Anhun Dingshen Wan (Soul-Calming Spirit-Pacifying Pill) for aftercare. All yield miraculous results. These are treatment methods for the six exogenous pathogens. Regarding internal injuries: cold form and cold drinks damage the Lung. Lung injury causes cold pathogen to constrain internally, unable to descend, inevitably leading to wheezing, coughing, and a sound like a water fowl in the throat. This corresponds to Zhiyin (Branch Fluid Retention) and Xuanyin (Suspension Fluid Retention) in *Jingui Yaolue*. Mild cases use Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending Qi Decoction); severe cases use Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) or Shegan Mahuang Tang (Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction), because cold pathogen must be dispersed with warmth. If dietary irregularity, hunger/fullness imbalance, or fatigue damages the Spleen, causing Spleen Yang to fail to ascend, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) or Xiaojianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) to regulate the middle, and phlegm will transform spontaneously. If sudden anger damages the Liver, Liver Qi rebels and attacks the Stomach, also generating phlegm, accompanied by hypochondriac pain, vomiting, bitter taste, and acid belching. Use Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus Moutan Cortex, Gardeniae Fructus, Indigo Naturalis, and Bamboo Shavings. Or use Yueju Wan (Resolve Depression Pill) coated with Indigo Naturalis. Or add Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua, 木瓜), Pruni Mume Fructus (Wumei, 乌梅), and Coptidis Rhizoma to calm Stomach Qi. Or use Haematitum (Daizhe, 代赭), Lithotrichum (Haishi, 海石), and Tribuli Fructus (Jili, 蒺藜) to subdue the Liver, ensuring Wood and Earth do not conflict. If sexual exhaustion damages the Kidney, Water overflows as phlegm, also causing wheezing, orthopnea, and inability to lie flat. This differs from wheezing due to cold damaging the Lung. Lung Qi injury presents with wiry pulse, or deep-thin with slippery-rapid Cun position. Kidney deficiency wheezing presents with deficient-large pulse, and Chi position floating. This can be verified. For Water overflowing as phlegm, use warming and tonifying methods. Mild cases use Jianzhong Tang; severe cases use Erjia Longmu Tang (Double Added Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction) or Bajia Shenqi Wan (Eight-Ingredient Kidney Qi Pill) as decoction, warming the Kidney so Water does not overflow, eliminating phlegm-wheezing. The Classic states: "For deficiency of essence, tonify with flavor." Thus, use Lycii Fructus (Gouqi, 枸杞), Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Cervi Cornus Gelatinum (Lujiaojiao, 鹿角胶), Tribuli Fructus (Tongjili, 潼蒺藜), Sepiae Endoconcha (Haipiaoxiao, 海螵蛸), Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 杜仲), Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi, 补骨脂), and potent animal products to achieve efficacy. For old phlegm of years, entrenched in nests, follow Yu Jiayan's method to transport it out. Subsequently, tonify the Spleen to fill the void. For phlegm-stagnation forming masses in chest and abdomen, hard and large as bowls or plates, use pill medications to attack. Such as Rheae Radix et Rhizoma, Sparganii Rhizoma (Sanleng, 三棱), Curcumae Radix (Ezhu, 莪术), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caulis (Guixu, 归须), Persicae Semen, Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆), and Raphini Semen (Laifuzi, 莱菔子) made into pills. However, do not overdose to avoid damaging healthy qi. I, having found no fixed methods for treating phlegm in antiquity, have rashly commented. I await correction from experts.
