Sudden onset of eye disease, severe pain making it difficult to open the eyes, contagious nature of the epidemic eye disease, photophobia and aversion to sunlight. Ulcers form on the white part of the eye (sclera), with a sensation of hidden pain and grittiness as if millet sand were present; eyelid swelling and ulceration of the palpebral sacs, with inverted eyelashes. Pterygium growing over the cornea, red vessels penetrating the pupil, nebulae and membranes obscuring vision like a hanging curtain. Tearing when exposed to wind, leakage of pus from the lacrimal sac (chronic dacryocystitis), residual toxicity from Cold Damage causing depression of the black part of the eye (cornea/lens area). Protrusion of the black part of the eye, recurrent hordeolum (stye), proliferation of tissue in the eyelid sacs, strabismus induced by wind pulling. Night blindness with fixed gaze, trauma-induced nebula formation, blood flooding the pupil, injury from flying dust. Recurrent eye diseases with underlying causes, hard and swollen eyelids, distending pain in the pupil, frequent episodes accompanied by dryness and astringency. Redness and astringency at the inner canthus, redness and astringency at the outer canthus. Binglun nebula, plum blossom nebula, spiral nebula, floating nebula, solid nebula, damp nebula, dry nebula, nail-head nebula, white nebula, red nebula, green nebula, yellow nebula, black nebula, nebulae that appear and disappear intermittently. Internal tension with external relaxation, contusions and injuries.
The world believes that eye diseases belong to Fire syndromes; however, without external invasion of Wind pathogen, the eyes would not become diseased. Because the couli (pores and interstitial spaces) are constrained by Wind pathogen, internal Fire cannot vent outward, carrying Liver Wood Qi upward to rush into the eye orifices. Blood follows the Fire's movement, resulting in Red Eye disease. With timely regulation and treatment, complete recovery is naturally achieved. If left untreated for a long time, or if treatment is ineffective and mismanaged by incompetent physicians, it eventually forms Externally Obstructing disorders (Wai Zhang). The so-called Externally Obstructing disorder is caused by the condensation of Wind, accumulation of Heat, and stagnation of Blood. The therapeutic method should be to dispel Wind, clear Heat, invigorate Blood, and brighten the eyes. One must use Modified Jin Ye Tang (Golden Fluid Decoction) as the main formula, and apply Yu Hua Dan (Jade Flower Powder) externally to the eyes for self-healing. In cases where nebulae and membranes obscure vision, apply Xian Zhuan Zi Jin Gao (Immortal Transmitted Purple Gold Ointment); this ointment can restore sight to the blind. Alternatively, using Wudang, Renlong, or Cijun is also excellent.
Treatment for Externally Obstructing disorders and similar conditions.
Ruan Qianhu (Soft Peucedani Radix, 1 qian), Bai Jiegeng (White Platycodonis Radix, 8 fen), Zhi Fangfeng (Straight Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1 qian), Chuan Duhuo (Sichuan Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 3 fen), Jing Shaoyao (Peony Root from Beijing, 1 qian), Fei Zhimu (Platycodoni Rhizoma fried, 5 fen).
Chop into slices, decoct in water, and take hot.
For those with heavy invasion of Wind-Cold, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 5 fen) and Xiao Chuanxiong (Sichuan Chuanxiong Rhizome, 2 fen) and Baizhi Shao (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix tip, 2 fen) in the first two doses; remove these herbs in subsequent doses.
For excessive tearing, add Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 2 fen) and Jiayuanju (Garden Chrysanthemi Flos, 5 fen).
For swelling, add Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen, 3 fen).
For severe pain, add Nong Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex, 3 fen).
For severe redness, add Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 3 fen), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, 4 fen), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 6 fen), and Honghua (Carthami Flos, 3 fen).
For nebulae, add Muzei (Equiseti Herba, 4 fen) and Bai Jili (Tribuli Fructus, 8 fen).
For nebulae and pterygium, add Shijueming (Concha Arcae, 1 qian, calcined).
For blurred vision, add Mimenghua (Buddlejae Flos, 8 fen) and Ji Baiju (White Chrysanthemi Flos, 5 fen).
For redness at the outer canthus, add Zhiren (Gardeniae Fructus, 7 fen, charred).
For redness at the inner canthus, add Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 1 qian, fried), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh soaked in Licorice decoction, bone removed, fried, 1 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 1 qian, heart removed), Ji Baiju (White Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 fen), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 1 qian), Danggui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix tail, 3 fen), and Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 qian).
For initial onset of Red Eye disease, taking 6-7 doses will result in cure with no sequelae for the eyes. (External eye drops)
For recurrent cases, where Wind pathogen and accumulated Heat have entered the meridians and flare up upon exposure to cold, take Jin Ye Tang (Golden Fluid Decoction) for more than 10 doses. Afterwards, it may be prepared as a powder or pill for administration. Regulate for 34 days, applying Yu Hua Dan (Jade Flower Powder) externally once daily, and it will heal.
For those with weak constitutions, use Modified Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) taken on an empty stomach, and Jin Ye San (Golden Fluid Powder) after meals; this method is most excellent.
When taking Jin Ye Tang (Golden Fluid Decoction), it must be taken hot after meals. Only one dose per day should be taken; do not advance rapidly, lest it damage Stomach Qi. After 6-7 days of administration, the disease will heal spontaneously.
For those with severe internal Heat, constipation, and robust young constitutions, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 1-2 qian to promote bowel movement, then remove Dahuang. This disease is most common in Beijing; the decoction uses Wu Long (Five Dragons).
