Lu, a male child. After the eruption of sha (scarlet fever-like rash), he developed aphonia (loss of voice). There were white putrid lesions inside the throat and at the glottis, accompanied by panting, nasal flaring, phlegm rales in the larynx, yellow tongue coating, and rapid pulse. The sha-heat toxin was accumulating and steaming in the Lung and Stomach, preventing the distribution of Lung fluids, which condensed into stagnation and formed phlegm. Phlegm-heat lingered in the Lung and Stomach, damaging the lung tissue, and causing the qi mechanism to fail to connect continuously. The throat is the gateway of the Lung and Stomach; due to heat in the Lung and Stomach, white putrid lesions appeared inside the throat and at the glottis, the voice was hoarse, and the epiglottis flesh detached. The condition was critical. I tentatively prescribed clearing heat, treating warm diseases, detoxifying, and resolving phlegm-heat, aiming to rein in the horse at the cliff's edge and turn back the already overturned wave, though this is merely doing one's utmost human effort.

Sun, a male child. After the eruption of sha, there was injury to Yin fluids in the Lung and Stomach, with latent pathogenic factors lingering. Body heat did not subside, accompanied by cough, sore throat, thirst with desire to drink, crimson tongue body, yellow tongue coating, and slippery-rapid pulse. Latent heat accumulated and steamed in the Lung and Stomach, scorching body fluids into phlegm. The Lung lost its clear-descending function, and the Stomach lost its harmonious descending function. The throat is the gateway of the Lung and Stomach; due to heat in the Lung and Stomach, there was sore throat. Now, I prescribe Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) with modifications, to clear the Yangming channel, resolve accumulated heat, and assist with substances that generate fluids and resolve phlegm.

Qian Zuo (Patient named Qian or referring to left side/patient). After the eruption of sha, an external pathogen was contracted again. Phlegm stagnation obstructed internally, and water-dampness failed to transform. The Taiyin Spleen and Yangming Stomach were affected. There was generalized edema, rebellious qi making it difficult to lie flat, severe chills and high fever, loose stools, nausea/vomiting preventing food intake, greasy tongue coating, and rapid pulse. This is ethereal external pathogen interacting with sticky phlegm stagnation, blocking the Lung and Stomach. Lung qi cannot descend, Spleen weakness fails to transport and transform, allowing water-dampness to easily gather. It irrigates the interstices, overflows and spreads everywhere without restriction. The Sanjiao lacks authority in draining and conducting water. The condition is dangerous. Tentatively, I will disperse pathogens and separate/drain them, while resolving phlegm stagnation. It remains to be seen if it will be effective.
