The origin of blood loss lies in heat causing disaster; one must carefully examine whether it is new or old, and determine deficiency or excess. When qi ascends without descending, symptoms appear in the upper body, indicating yang sinking and yin trapped within the large and small intestines.

Yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity leads to bleeding; the treatment method is to tonify yin and suppress yang. As long as qi descends, blood returns to its vessels without forgetting this principle. Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) is not necessarily cooling if misapplied.

Xijiao Dihuang Tang is most effective, containing Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root). Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) processed with wine should also be used; why worry about blood not returning to its meridians?

Night sweats stop upon waking, indicating yin deficiency, yang hyperactivity, and extreme heat at the cou li (interstices). These are all due to yin-yang imbalance, and there are three types considered untreatable which require detailed analysis.

Sweat sticky like oil indicates exhaustion of body fluids; sweat condensing into beads indicates injury to qi and blood; sweat flowing like water, cold and pale, is best treated with Jianzhong Liangde Tang (Jianzhong Two-Obtained Decoction).
