Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Shijunzi Rou (Quisqualis Semen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma, processed), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma, warm-processed), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted), Kudong Genpi (Meliae Cortex Radicis), Gan Chan (Bufo Skin, burnt to retain properties), Hezi Rou (Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus), Yeming Sha (Stercoris Noctuae). Lvfan (Chalcanthitum) in equal parts, all ground into fine powder, mixed with vinegar paste to form pills, taken with aged rice decoction.
Ancestral method for treating malaria: Use Zhangu Dan (Ghost-Slaying Pill) to intercept the disease, and Weiling Wan (Weiling Pill) to regulate the spleen and stomach. Commonly used Pingwei San (Pingwei Powder), added with Changshan (Polygalae Radix) and Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus) ground into powder. Each dose is "one character" (a small measure), taken at wugeng (3-5 AM) on the day of onset, adjusted with decoction made from seven peach and willow branches.
Renshen 5 fen, Changshan (wine-fried) 3 fen, Binglang 3 fen, Caoguo Ren 4 fen, Lvfan Fen (fried), Gancao (roasted), Beimu 3 fen, Qingpi 5 fen, decocted in water and taken orally.
Another prescription:
Changshan, Binglang (one piece), Danggui, Cangzhu, Gancao, Chenpi. Take this dose first; grind the herbs finely with wine, soak in boiling wine until very concentrated. If ineffective, take seven peach branches and seven juncus effusus stems, decoct in water two or three times, expose overnight, and take warm at wugeng on the day of onset. Prohibit raw, cold, chicken, fish, and other stimulating foods.
Xijiang Yue (Song Ci):
When malaria comes like a tide (3), phlegm is generated by internal injury and external contraction. The initial interception method seems like that of an immortal, but do not nurture the tiger and leave trouble behind. For external contraction, use Xiaochai Yinzi (Minor Bupleurum Decoction); for internal injury, start with Pingwei San. Add Caoguo and Changshan internally; using peach branches as a guiding herb is most effective (4).
After interception, only then regulate the spleen and stomach; simply clear malaria and nourish the spleen (5). Expelling evil and supplementing righteousness makes a good physician, not inferior to Zhang Zhongjing and Qian Yi. If long-standing malaria forms masses, with sallow complexion, abdominal fullness, and emaciation, Yuetchan Wan (Moon Toad Pill) is the foundation. Keep this prescription secret.
If it is long-standing malaria in children (6), or tidal fever occurs in the afternoon, or every other day or every third day, interception methods should not be too urgent or violent. Only use methods to nourish the spleen and clear malaria, combining with Jisheng Wan (Jisheng Pill) for regulation. Do not lightly use Shendan Zhangu (Divine Pill Ghost-Slayer); administer clearly at wugeng on the day of onset.
If malaria and dysentery occur together, one must know the auspicious and inauspicious signs. Generally, diet must follow the seasons; if stomach qi is complete, it is treatable. If there is no desire for milk and food, forcibly supporting the spleen and stomach, do not slacken on Weiling Wan, occasionally using Xianglian Wan (Coptis and Aucklandia Pill) to stop dysentery.
Long-standing malaria often becomes a complicated syndrome: scorched spleen, distended abdomen with visible veins, dry neck, thin legs, and diminished yuan shen (original spirit); food intake is completely absent. Face and eyes are puffy and weak, limbs have no strength and are difficult to move. No need for medical treatment, as it would be vain effort; this is a critical illness with nine deaths and one life.
Seven-character Regulated Verse:
To calm malaria and nourish the spleen, use Renshen, Baizhu, Chenpi, and Danggui Shen. Fuling and Houpo stir-fried with ginger juice, Cangzhu five qian soaked in rice water. Fencao and Banxia soaked seven times, Qingpi, Chaihu, and Huangqin. Changshan and Caoguo two qian half, Biejia three qian, efficacy like a divine spirit.
