All five zang organs can cause upper jiao asthma (asthma affecting the upper body) and coughing. However, the Lung is the canopy of the five zang organs (the highest organ covering the others), and all meridians derive their qi from the Lung. Since asthma disturbs the movement of qi, the Lung is considered the primary site of pathology. If a patient presents with an excess pulse (pulse indicating excess pathogenic factors) at the yin position before the qikou (a specific area on the radial artery used for diagnosis) on the right hand cunkou (radial pulse position), this indicates excess in the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. The lungs will necessarily be distended, accompanied by upward rushing of asthma, a sensation of blockage in the throat, a feeling similar to nausea or vomiting, and spontaneous sweating; these are all manifestations of Lung Excess syndrome. Conversely, if the pulse before the qikou is deficient, it will inevitably lead to dryness of the throat without saliva, shortness of breath, and insufficient respiration; this constitutes Lung Qi deficiency and depletion of vital energy.
To treat upper jiao asthma with fullness, where the patient must lean forward to breathe and cannot lie flat.
Xingren (Apricot Seed, Semen Armeniacae Amarum) and Taoren (Peach Kernel, Semen Persicae), both stir-fried with wheat bran, skin and tips removed; Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark, Cortex Mori Radicis), honey-fried three times, soaked in rice wash water overnight, then drained (each 1 liang); Renshen (Ginseng Root, Radix Ginseng) (1 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct with 1 zhan of water, 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and 1 Zao (Jujube, Fructus Jujubae) until reduced to 7/10 volume. Take at any time.
To calm asthma, tonify the Heart and Kidney, and direct rebellious qi downward.
Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, Colla Corii Asini) (1 liang 3 qian, stir-fried); Ji (Chicken, Carnis Gallus Domesticus) (half a chicken); Baixianmao (likely referring to a specific herb, possibly Baihuangjing or similar, kept as transliteration here due to ambiguity in standard WHO list, but context implies a tonic herb) (0.5 liang, soaked in rice wash water for three nights, dried, and stir-fried); Tuanshen (Round Ginseng, Radix Ginseng) (1 fen).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mix with Nuomiyin (Sticky Rice Decoction) and take on an empty stomach.
To treat chronic severe asthma preventing sleep and lying flat, which has not responded to various medicines.
Baishiyings (White Quartz, Stalactite) (4 liang, select transparent and bright pieces, place in a raw silk bag. Use one male pig stomach, insert the medicine bag inside, sew tightly, and boil. Remove the medicine, replace with a new pig stomach, and repeat the boiling process three times. Finally, remove the medicine, drain, and grind into powder.)
Take the above powder, combine with 2 qian of Guanju Kuandonghua San (Official Bureau Winter Flower Powder, Formula based on Tussilaginis Flos), add 2 qian of the prepared powder, plus 2 cun of Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark, Cortex Mori Radicis), 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and 1 Zao (Jujube, Fructus Jujubae). Decoct with 1.5 zhan of water until reduced to 7/10 volume. Drink the entire amount at once. The pig stomach may also be consumed, but do not season with soy sauce, vinegar, salt, Sichuan pepper, or ginger.
To treat fire-pathogen rebellion causing upper jiao asthma and急促 breathing, with difficulty in the throat. It stops rebellion and directs qi downward.
Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, Radix Ophiopogonis) (heart/core removed, 1 liang 1 qian); Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae) (washed with hot water, 6 qian 1 zi); Renshen (Ginseng Root, Radix Ginseng) (1 fen); Gancao (Licorice Root, Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis) (honey-fried, 1 fen); Jingmi (Rice Grain, Semen Oryzae Sativae) (2 qian).
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take 4 daqian per dose, decoct with 3 zhan of water and 2 Zao (Jujube, Fructus Jujubae) until reduced to 6/10 volume. Strain the dregs and take on an empty stomach.
