The patient has hardness under the heart, fullness, stuffiness, and urgent pain; the muscles suffer from severe Bi syndrome (obstruction), with pain varying between acute and chronic like needle pricks, making flexion and extension impossible; the skin over the chest is painful to touch;
the chest feels stuffed and full, with shortness of breath; coughing and spitting induce pain; the throat is blocked and uncomfortable, with a tickling sensation like itching; the throat is dry; there is frequent desire to vomit;
restlessness and oppression occur; white sweat appears intermittently; the pain radiates through to the back; if untreated, death may occur within a few days. This disease is named Xiong Pi (Chest Stuffiness). It arises from extreme deficiency in the lower jiao, causing Qi to rush upward and control the diaphragm. The pulse is characterized by Yang Wei (weak) and Yin Jie (knotted).

Spleen governs Yi (Intent/Memory) and Si (Deliberation/Thought). Yi refers to remembering past events; Si involves the function of the Heart-Mind. Thus, it is stated that "Yan" (Speech) is not necessarily "Si", but "Si" must involve the Heart. This clearly refutes the external argument that Yi and Heart function simultaneously. When the Spleen is diseased, the Yi She (Residence of Intent) becomes unclear, and the Shen (Spirit) becomes restless, causing Ji Wang (Impaired Memory), where one exerts great effort to think but cannot recall. Alternatively, it is said: frequently forgetting things is called Ji Wang. Both conditions are treated together.
