Treating chest fullness caused by Zhi Yin (fluid retention in the chest and diaphragm).
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, four liang, processed with ginger juice) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, two liang, steamed) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, one liang, stir-fried with bran, pith removed)
The above ingredients are cut into coarse pieces for decoction. Each dose is four qian, boiled with one and a half zhan of water until reduced to seven-tenths volume, then filtered. It can be taken at any time, with dosage adjustments as needed.
Treating Zhi Yin presenting with cold hands and feet, excessive salivation and dry mouth, Qi rushing from the lower abdomen up to the chest and throat, numbness in the limbs, facial heat and flushing resembling drunkenness, followed by the sensation of heat flowing down to the inner thighs, difficult urination, occasional dizziness and vertigo, vomiting, and edema.
Fuling (Poria, four liang) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, three liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, three liang) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, two and a half liang)
The above ingredients are cut into coarse pieces for decoction. Each dose is four qian, boiled with one and a half zhan of water until reduced to seven-tenths volume, then filtered. Take on an empty stomach. After taking the medicine, the rushing Qi will subside. If cough and chest fullness occur instead, remove Guixin and add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), each three liang; if cough and fullness stop but thirst appears, and the rushing Qi recurs, this is because Xixin and Ganjiang are hot herbs; taking them should cause thirst. If thirst does not occur, it indicates Zhi Yin. The standard manifestation of Zhi Yin includes dizziness/vertigo (Mao); those with Mao must vomit. For vomiting, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), two and a half liang, to drain the fluid; once the fluid is drained, vomiting stops. If the patient has generalized edema and numbness, add Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), two and a half liang. If the face is red like drunkenness due to heat steaming upward from the stomach, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), three liang. Dosage adjustments must be made based on detailed syndrome differentiation.
