The mouth is the main gate of the body and the crucial pathway for the entry and exit of Ying and Wei nourishment. If its regulation is slightly impaired, disease will inevitably arise. Thus, heat causes bitterness, cold causes saltiness, retained food causes sourness, irritability causes astringency, deficiency causes blandness, and jaundice causes sweetness. The five flavors enter the mouth, are stored in the Stomach and Spleen, their essence is transported, and fluids are distributed to the Zang organs. If the Qi of an organ is excessive, the taste will correspondingly be biased. Alternatively, labor and stagnation may cause bad breath, and stagnation may cause sores. Sleep must not be lost; loss of sleep will exacerbate the condition.
