Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill)
Prescriptions for treating Chuanshen (infectious chronic wasting disease), Guzheng (bone-steaming fever), Feiwang (lung flaccidity), Zhuwu (syncope or mental abnormality due to evil qi), Guiqi (ghost qi), Xin tong (heart pain), Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), Shiqi (seasonal epidemic diseases), Zhangnue (miasma malaria), etc. (See "Jiu Tong Men" chapter for the formula).
This formula is widely popular in the world; it greatly stabilizes Qi and repels external pathogens. For any illness originating internally whose name is unknown, taking this formula is effective. It is especially effective for treating Qi Jue (sudden fainting due to rebellious Qi), Qi Bu He (disharmony of Qi), vomiting and diarrhea, and Ying Wei Guan Ge (obstruction of Ying and Wei Qi circulation with upper and lower blockage).
The patient suddenly experiences abdominal distension and fullness, inability to vomit or defecate, resembling Gan Huoluan (dry cholera characterized by severe abdominal colic, inability to vomit or defecate), which is what the world calls Chong E (sudden malignant attack). This arises because the person's spirit is incomplete and mind is prone to fear, thus being attacked by evil ghosts or having them attach to the body, causing a heavy and silent demeanor, sleep-talking, delirium, slander, cursing, exposing others' affairs, disregarding ridicule or suspicion, often speaking of future fortune or misfortune, which comes true without error when the time arrives; knowing the origin of a person's thoughts before they act, making them climb heights and cross dangers as if walking on flat ground; or weeping, moaning, and avoiding people. The symptoms are myriad, like being drunk or mad, impossible to list completely. These are all ghosts, spirits, and various demons bewitching people, or触犯 (offending) taboos, actions of land deities or gods. There is no reality to it; simply verify and treat according to local customs. The formulas are listed below.
Treating sudden attack by Evil Qi, feeling touched by Ghost Strike or Flying Corpse, various cases of sudden breath cessation and loss of consciousness; or even after death where breath has ceased and teeth are clenched shut. Remove teeth and pour in decoction, or if the decoction enters the mouth but cannot be swallowed, part the patient's hair, grasp shoulders from left and right, press shoulders and pull to stretch the body. After the medicine goes down, increase the dose, consume up to one sheng (approx. 200ml), and the patient will revive immediately within moments.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, remove joints, three liang) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove bark, two liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang) Xingren (Prunus armeniaca Seed, remove skin and tip, 210 grains).
Chop the above ingredients into coarse powder. Take four qian (approx. 12-15g) per dose, boil in one and a half sheng (approx. 300ml) of water until reduced to seven parts (approx. 210ml), strain, take at any time.
