Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill)
Treats sudden attack by malignant evil qi or infection by Zhu disease. (Formula details see "Jiutong Men" chapter).
In the mountainous regions of Fujian in Jiangnan, locals keep hundreds of insects such as snakes, vipers, centipedes, slugs, and toads in the same container, allowing them to eat each other. The survivor is considered spiritual and worshipped. Its venom is collected and mixed with vegetables, fruits, or food to harm others, with the delusional hope of gaining blessings and wealth. If a person is poisoned, symptoms vary endlessly, as extensively described in the treatment of various Gu poisons, and some may die after years of suffering. Additionally, some households worship certain entities with incense and offerings as if they were ancestors; this is also called Gu, which can cause illness. The world calls it "Gu Zhu"; classified by surname into the five tones, it is called "Wu Gu". These phenomena are common in remote and backward areas but rarely heard of in the central capital.
Those poisoned by Gu poison experience severe cramping pain in the heart and abdomen, as if being gnawed by something, with vomiting and defecation resembling rotting flesh. If not treated immediately, the poison will destroy the five Zang organs leading to death. A verification method involves having the patient spit into water; if the saliva sinks, it indicates Gu poison. If someone uses Gu poison to harm another, and one wishes to know the perpetrator's name, burn old drum skin into powder, take one cun bi (approx. 2-3 grams) with water, and within moments, the patient will spontaneously call out the Gu master's name. One can then command the Gu master to come and summon the victim, who will recover. There are also specific formulas for treating this condition.
