Take an appropriate amount of river snails (Cipangopaludina chinensis), rinse clean, add one liang of sesame oil (Sesamum indicum) into water, causing their mucus to secrete naturally. Geng Sheng notes: The aforementioned formula is suitable for treating edema (swelling due to fluid retention) when there is accumulated heat within. I recall that *Xiangzu Biji* records a rather simple prescription, which I have tried with success. The formula uses three old loofah fibers (Luffa cylindrica, removing seeds and cutting into pieces), forty-nine kernels of croton seed (Crotonis Tiglii Semen, shelled). Stir-fry the croton seed together with the loofah fiber until the croton seed turns deep yellow. Remove the croton seed, add three he of yellow rice (Pennisetum glaucum), and stir-fry together with the loofah fiber until the rice turns yellow. Grind the rice into powder and make pills the size of wu zi (seeds of Styrax officinalis). Take thirty pills per dose, administered with Coix Seed Decoction (Yiyi Ren Tang); the effect is miraculous.
One liang of purified mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas), added to three bowls of water, boiled until dissolved, and exposed overnight outdoors. Filter and clarify. Wash the eyes morning and evening; redness subsides within three days, even for chronic conditions.
Three qian of Tribulus terrestris (Tribuli Fructus), decocted in water to wash the affected area; the corneal nebulae disappear within three days.
Supplementary Formula: For nebulae appearing in the eyes, grind Fritillaria thunbergii bulb (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus) juice with human milk and drip into the eyes, three to four times daily, until they recede.
Apply juice of water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) to the affected area for immediate cure.
Soak half sheng of japonica rice (Oryza sativa var. japonica) in Rehmannia glutinosa root juice (Rehmanniae Radix Recens Juice), dry in the sun. Repeat soaking and drying three times. Cook this rice into porridge and consume one zhan; recovery occurs within several days, as it clears blood heat.
Scrape off the skin and hairs of Momordica cochinchinensis seed (Momordicae Semen) using a bowl shard. Slice the kernel thinly and soak in cold water for about three hours. Pry open the patient's mouth and drip the liquid along with the slice, moistening down to the throat, yielding immediate results.
One bi of litharge powder (Lithargyri Pulvis), taken mixed with tea for immediate cure.
Inability to take water or food, critical condition nearing death.
A pill made from soot from the hearth (Bai Cao Shuang) and honey, the size of a Chinese quince seed (Euryale ferox). Dissolve one pill in fresh drawn water and administer by force-feeding; severe cases require no more than two pills. This is named Bailin Pill.
Peel one clove of garlic, crush into a paste, and form into a cake the size of a coin. Apply to the sole of the right foot for left nasal hemorrhage, to the sole of the left foot for right nasal hemorrhage, and to both soles if both nostrils bleed; healing occurs immediately.
