Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Huangjing, 2 qian, honey-fried) [Note: Text says Sangbaipi, corrected to Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus contextually or kept as Mulberry Root Bark if strictly literal. Given "Sangbaipi" is explicitly written, I will use Mulberry Root Bark]. Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi, 2 qian, honey-fried) Osteae Cortex (Digupi, 2 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 qian)
Commentary: The above formula is indicated for all cases of lung-heat cough; modifications should be made according to the specific symptoms. For severe cough, add Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) and Liliis Bulbus (Baihe); for phlegm, add Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu). If facial flushing and cough are due to heart-fire insulting metal (xin huo xing jin), add Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Aurantii Fructus (Qingpi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), forming Ren Shen Ping Fei San, to drain the pathogenic factors from the lung. If cough is accompanied by nasal congestion and heaviness of the body, it is caused by wind-cold injuring the lung; Can Shu Yin or Jin Fei Cao San can be used to disperse the pathogen.
Whenever the tongue appears white, swollen, and tender, it indicates deficiency of qi and essence in the lung and large intestine; Bu Fei Tang is the primary treatment.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 1 qian) Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 1 qian, fried) Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 1 qian) Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi, 2 qian)
Asteris Radix (Ziwan, 1 qian) Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus? No, text says Sangpi again. Mulberry Root Bark (Sangpi, 1 qian, honey-fried) Decoct in water with a small amount of honey mixed for administration.
Commentary: The above formula treats deficiency of lung-metal qi, which fails to generate kidney-water, resulting in water's inability to control fire, leading to deficient yang flaming upward and causing coughs and other symptoms.
Whenever the tongue appears white and dry, it belongs to blood deficiency and excess fire in the large intestine; Run Chang Zi Shui Yin added with Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) is the primary treatment.
Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi, 4 qian or 8 qian) Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, 2 qian) Corni Fructus (Yurou, 2 qian) Lycii Fructus (Gouqi, 4 qian)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guishen, 3 qian) Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi, 3 qian) Cistanches Herba (Congrong, 3 qian, wine-washed) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 qian)
Commentary: The above formula treats lack of blood in the large intestine and dry stool constipation; its effect should be very rapid.
Whenever the tongue appears white and dry, it belongs to excessive fire in the lung organ; Sheng Zi Zi Shui Yin added with Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) is the primary treatment.
Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi, 4 qian) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 2 qian) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 2 qian) Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 1.5 qian) Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 1.5 qian, stir-fried with sticky rice) Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 1.5 qian) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 2.5 qian, earth-fried) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 qian, fried) Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 1 qian) Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 1 qian)
Commentary: The original formula is indicated for post-febrile disease after heat subsides, where there is yin that is difficult to tonify and yang that is prone to disturbance; both require nourishment. This formula addresses symptoms such as restlessness remaining after sweating, dry mouth with slight fever, difficult defecation, and short, dark urine. Additionally, in cases of Shaoyang-Yangming syndrome presenting with swelling and pain in the hands and feet, caused by fire-dryness generating wind and wind invading the extremities, one need not wait for sweating to occur; administering this formula with added Chaihu and Huangqin immediately will invariably be effective.
Whenever the tongue appears white and slippery, it belongs to yang deficiency and qi sinking in the large intestine; Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang administered with Gu Chang San is the primary treatment. See Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang in the preceding section.
