Sun (18 years old): Mental dullness, deep pulse. Epilepsy caused by fright and alarm. Speech is not very clear. This is phlegm-fire obstructing the spiritual orifices. Strictly avoid alcohol, meat, and rich flavors. Cultivate well in a quiet room. Can be cured after one year. (Pathogenesis: Fright and alarm stir up rising phlegm-fire)
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong), Arisaematis Cum Bile (Danning), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizome (Changpu), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi).
Chen: Anger and fright stimulation. External disturbance affecting the interior. Leading to the hyperactive Yang of the Five Emotions escaping control without restraint. Ancient texts collected differentiations on epilepsy and mania, stating that Yang merging into Yin and Yin merging into Yang vary.
Currently, it is Yang rebellion causing mania. Without bitter medicines to descend, the mental clarity cannot be restored. Take Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Dahurica and Gentian Pill) 3 qian.
Ni: Sudden fright and alertness. Yang Qi rebels upward. Resulting in mental dullness and insomnia. Suddenly shouting. No eating, no hunger, no bowel movement. Showing signs of epilepsy. Take Longhui Wan twice.
Lu (14 years old): Phlegm disease has developed into epilepsy. Difficult to cure.
Sichuan White Aconite Root Tubers (Bai Fuzi), Indian Gypsum (Tianzhuhuang), Aged Arisaema with Bile (Chen Danning), Limestone Acorus (Shi Changpu), Coptis Chinensis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin), Poria (Fushen), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Juhong).
Wang: Fright and alarm. Yang rises, wind moves internally. Old epilepsy attacks. Vomiting phlegm, retching, unable to speak. Collateral vessels lose their function. (Pathogenesis: Yang Qi stagnation, obstruction of orifices and collaterals)
Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Limestone Acorus (Shi Changpu), Arisaema with Bile (Danning), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng), Gastrodia Elata Rhizome (Tianma), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Juhong).
Cao (14 years old): Disease started in Spring and extended to Late Summer. Epileptic convulsions occurred repeatedly. The previous use of Longhui Wan intended to drain Liver and Gallbladder fire with bitter cold. First dose caused diarrhea. This indicates Yin deficiency from chronic illness. Propose nourishing Yin to harmonize Yang. Add sour substances to constrain.
Raw Chicken Egg Yolk (Sheng Jizi Huang), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Coptis Chinensis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao), Rice Vinegar (Micu).
Jin (20 years old): Epileptic convulsions. Mental dullness, stiff limbs.
Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao)*, Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Acorus (Changpu), Stir-fried Pinellia Tuber (Chao Banxia), Stir-fried Polygala Root (Chao Yuanzhi), Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome (Yujin), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Juhong).
Wu: Fright and mania. Wood and Fire disturbing. Although calm for now, still palpitations and anxiety. Insomnia at night. Pulse is empty and thin like a thread. No longer excess phlegm-fire. Propose Xinbu Dan (Heart-Nourishing Decoction) to regulate Heart function. (Pathogenesis: Wood-Fire disturbing, Heart Spirit deficiency)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fushen), Ziziphus Seed (Zaoren), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Salvia Miltiorrhiza Radix (Danshen), Asparagus Tuber (Tiantong), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Biota Seed (Baiziren), Acorus (Changpu), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi).
Ye (Family): Every time menstruation comes with dark purple blood, epilepsy must occur. Nighttime screams shake the house. Daytime mental dullness. Face green, frequent laughter. Fire and Wind originate from Liver. Drain Gallbladder heat to clear Spirit. Discuss further methods later. (Pathogenesis: Wood-Fire stagnation, Blood stasis)
Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Salvia Miltiorrhiza Radix (Danshen), Fine Rehmannia Root (Xi Shengdi), Black Gardenia Fruit (Hei Shanzhi), Chaff Flower Fruit (Chongweizi), Picrorhiza Rhizome (Huhuanglian), mixed with Amber Powder (Hupo Mo).
Zhang (22 years old): Insomnia in Winter. Epilepsy then occurs. This is Yang failing to hide and store. Treatment focuses on Liver and Kidney. (Pathogenesis: Rising Yang of Liver and Kidney) Use Hujian method (Tiger-Kneading Method).
Certain case: Mania. Pulse does not beat against fingers (weak). Propose connecting Heart and Kidney. Benefit Spirit and Mind. (Pathogenesis: Fire stagnation, Heart-Kidney non-interaction)
Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Tortoise Plastron (Guijia), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian - wine fried), Acorus (Changpu), Poria (Fushen), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), Bamboo Leaf (Zhuye).
Ye (29 years old): Yang rise of the Five Emotions. Confused spirit. Fluctuating between clear and severe. Not due to tangible pathogens. But heat transforming into wind ascending to the vertex. Causing all-night insomnia. Attacking phlegm and promoting drainage will definitely not work. First use extremely bitter medicine to hope for subduing hyperactive Yang. (Pathogenesis: Wind-Yang hyperactivity)
Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Gentiana Scabra Rootstock (Longdancao), Salvia Miltiorrhiza Radix (Danshen), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), Aloe (Lvhui), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), Mint Herb (Bohe).
Certain case: Usually overworked. Body and mind both active. Sadness, worry, fright, alarm. Emotional injury internally. Gradually vague spirit. Similar to epilepsy. The disease is no longer confined to one Zang organ. In medicine regarding Seven Emotions causing damage, for two thousand years, no single formula covers all. However, the general principle is determined by Yin-Yang imbalance. All activity belongs to Yang. Should follow "Stillness generates Yin" principle. Yang attacking collateral and Zang organs, Yin is uneasy. Astringent, securing, and stabilizing methods. Long-term intake can be effective. Household affairs and sights/sounds must be excluded. Set a period of 100 days.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Pearl (Lianzhu), Poria (Fushen), Ziziphus Seed (Zaoren), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhigancao), Raw Dragon Bone (Sheng Longgu), Cornus Fruit (Yurou), Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi), Gold Foil (Jinbo).
Heaven and Earth are one Yin-Yang. When Yin-Yang harmonizes, Heaven is clear and Earth is peaceful. Once there is excess/deficiency, extraordinary changes occur. The human body is also one Yin-Yang. When Yin-Yang harmonizes, Spirit is clear and settled. Once there is excess/deficiency, unpredictable disasters arise. Thus, Nei Jing says: Excess Yang leads to Mania (Kuang), Excess Yin leads to Catatonia (Dian). Epilepsy (Xian) and Catatonia (Dian) share the same principle. Ancients differentiated Kuang, Dian, and Xian, stating Yang merges into Yin, Yin merges into Yang. This is an unchangeable theory. Regarding current symptoms: Kuang involves little sleep, no hunger. Delusions and laughter. Even climbing roofs or crossing walls. Symptoms are mostly restless and awake. Dian involves singing or crying. Drunk-like or foolish. Even unaware of filth or cleanliness. Symptoms are mostly quiet and comatose. Xian occurs unpredictably. Sudden collapse. Convulsions. Sounds from mouth. Later generations named them Horse, Ox, Pig, Sheep, Chicken Xian based on sounds. Symptoms stop after a certain time. Etiology: Kuang from great fright/anger, disease in Liver, Gallbladder, Stomach meridians. Three Yang meridians ascend together. Fire blazes, phlegm surges, Heart orifice closes. Dian from accumulated worry/depression, disease in Heart, Spleen, Conception Vessel. Three Yin meridians block and fail to circulate. Qi stagnates, phlegm confuses, Spirit mixes. Xian from fright, irregular diet, or fetal fright. Internal organs uneven. Long-term dysregulation. Touching accumulated phlegm, rebellious Qi and internal wind. Sudden violent rebellion. Cannot stop until Qi returns. For treatment: Observe signs, diagnose pulse, differentiate deficiency/excess. For Excess Kuang: Chengqi Tang, Baihu Tang to directly reduce Yangming fire. Shengtie Luo Yin to heavily restrain Liver/Gallbladder evil. For Deficiency Kuang: Strengthen Water to control Fire. Er Yin Jian etc. For Excess Dian: Guntan Wan to open phlegm obstruction. Qingxin Wan to drain fire depression. For Deficiency Dian: Nourish Spirit and connect Will. Guipi Tang, Zhongzhi Dan etc. For Excess Xian: Wu Xian Wan to attack wind. Kongxian Wan to rob phlegm. Longhui Wan to drain fire. For Deficiency Xian: Tonify Qi and Blood. Regulate Yin-Yang. Yingying Tang, Heche Wan etc. The main idea for Kuang, Dian, Xian treatments does not exceed this. If Liver Wind and Phlegm-Fire: Bitter-Spicy to open/drain. If Spirit deficiency and Fire flaming: Clear and Tonify together. If Liver/Gallbladder Rebellious Yang transforms into wind: Extremely bitter medicine to subdue. If Spirit and Mind both deficient: Connect Heart and Kidney method. If excessive mental labor: Follow Stillness generating Yin intent. Astringent tonification and stabilization. Although plans are not detailed, every piece is a treasure. Physicians only need to regulate Yin-Yang, preventing imbalance. Then stagnation/rebellion disappears naturally, and Spirit/Qi returns to normal. (Recorded by Gong Shangnian)
