[Throat Pain and Ulcers]
Pharyngospasm (Hou Bi) is mostly caused by phlegm-heat. In severe cases, using Camellia Oleifera Oil (Tong You) to induce vomiting is employed. One prescription uses Belamcanda Chinensis Rhizome (She Gan) with reverse-flowing water to induce vomiting. Another prescription involves holding the fruit of Prunus salicina (Li Shi) in the mouth, and applying a paste made from the ground root of the plum tree around the neck (using freshly picked garden roots). Strangling wind (Chan Hou Feng) belongs to the category of phlegm-heat. Dai Yuanli stated: "It refers to swelling both inside and outside the throat." It is treated with Camellia Oleifera Oil (Tong You), inducing vomiting using a goose feather quill. Another method uses the residue of lamp oil (Deng You Jiao) to induce vomiting. Additionally, Polygala Tenuifolia Root (Yuan Zhi) with the heart removed is powdered, mixed with water, and applied around the neck for immediate effect; it can also induce vomiting. Sores and pain in the throat are due to blood deficiency and deficient fire, often belonging to uncontrolled wandering deficient fire lodging in the throat. Ingredients include Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), Schizonepetae Herba (Jing Jie), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo) processed with honey. For deficient fire, use Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) and Bamboo Sap (Zhu Li); for blood deficiency, use Si Wu Tang plus Bamboo Sap (Zhu Li); for excess heat, use Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian), Schizonepetae Herba (Jing Jie), and Natrii Sulfas (Bo Xiao), mixed with honey and ginger juice for lozenges. To treat throat conditions, clean the root of Rhamnus utilis (Dao Di Ci Gen), grind it with a small amount of good wine, and drip the juice into the throat to stop pain immediately.
For pharyngospasm caused by wind-heat and phlegm, first use Qian Mian Tang, then Si Wu Tang added with Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu); nourishing yin will subdue the fire. Another prescription: powder the pod of Gleditsia Sinensis (Zhu Ya Zao Jiao), mix with frost-plum (Shuang Mei) for sucking. Another prescription: soak Semen Momordicae (Mu Bie Zi) in salt water, suck one pill. Another prescription: take one dose of Rubiae Cordifoliae Radix et Rhizoma (Qian Cao) to reduce fire in the blood. Another prescription: mix half a qian of Nitrum (Yan Xiao), half a qian of Alum (Ku Fan), and one qian of Ammonium Chloridum (Niao Sha) into powder, adjusted with juice extracted from Eucommiae Cortex (Du Zhong) and Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niu Xi). In throat closure (Hou Bi), sometimes a strand hangs down from the center, forming a small blood bead hanging in the throat. Use the root of Achyranthes bidentata (Du Niu Xi), specifically the straight, single-stemmed variety known as Drumstick Grass (Gu Chui Cao), crush it, mix with a little good rice vinegar, grind, extract three to five drops of juice, and drip into the nose to rupture the bead. Throat pain must be treated with Schizonepetae Herba (Jing Jie). For yin deficiency with flaming fire rising, Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen) is essential. Another method for treating pharyngospasm involves aged white plums (Chen Nian Bai Mei) combined with centipedes (You Yan) [Note: Text implies a specific preparation involving these].
Xiong Huang Jie Du Wan: Treats strangling wind and acute throat wind, swelling and pain of double tonsils (Shuang E), where soups and medicines cannot be swallowed.
Realgar (Xiong Huang, 1 liang)
Crotonis Fructus (Ba Dou), oil removed (14 seeds)
Curcumae Radix (Yu Jin, 1 qian)
Powder the above ingredients, form pills like mung beans using vinegar paste. Take seven pills with clear hot tea; vomiting out stubborn phlegm leads to recovery, with great efficacy. If the jaw is clenched, pry it open with an instrument and administer; once swallowed, survival is assured.
Run Hou San: Treats qi stagnation with night fever, dryness and hard blockage in the throat.
Platycodonis Radix (Jie Geng, 2.5 qian)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Fen Cao, 1 qian)
Human Placenta (Zi He Che, 4 qian)
Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiang Fu, 3 qian)
Fermented Tea Pill (Bai Yao Jian, 1.5 qian)
Powder the above and apply inside the mouth.
Another prescription: For throat pain.
Borax (Peng Sha)
Calcanis Vitrioli (Dan Fan)
Bombyx Batryticatus (Bai Jiang Can)
Aged Frost Plum (Chen Shuang Mei)
Powder the above and mix for sucking.
