The Dao Cang Method (Inverting the Granary) is used to treat conditions such as paralysis, consumptive disease, gu poison, and leprosy. It eliminates the old and generates the new, supports deficiency, and tonifies damage; it can induce vomiting and purgation. Use twenty or fifteen *jin* (approx. 5-7.5 kg) of lean meat from the legs of a yellow, fat, intact male cow (*Bos taurus*). Boil it in a large pot with fast-flowing water moving in its natural direction. As the water reduces, replenish with broth; do not use cold water. Continue until the meat is thoroughly tender and no solid residue remains. Filter out the dregs. In a non-ventilated place, take one *zhong* (a traditional measuring vessel) warm. Wait for the medicinal action to reach the diaphragm, then continue taking it gradually until seven or eight *zhong* are consumed. If the patient refuses, force them to take more. The treatment must proceed until the skin and hair pores all ache, at which point vomiting and purgation will occur. In cold months, warm the decoction using a double-boiler method. If the pathology is in the upper jiao (Upper Burner), favoring vomiting, administer slowly in divided doses; do not be too rapid, lest the stomach reject it. For extreme vomiting and purgation, wait until all accumulated pathogens above and below are expelled. Stop when stool resembles walnut flesh, is odorless, and free of foul smell. After vomiting and diarrhea, if thirst occurs, do not give soup/water; the urine will become abundant. Collect this urine for the patient to drink, named "Lunhui Jiu" (Wheel-turning Wine), giving one or two bowls. This not only quenches thirst but also washes away residual turbidity. After one or two days, when severe hunger is felt, offer light congee. After three days, begin self-nourishment with small amounts of vegetable soup. By half a month, spirit will appear refreshed, and the body's heaviness/lightness will stabilize. Generally, when consuming seven or eight *zhong*, the medicinal power traverses the meridians and bone joints, searching out old turbidity. The struggle between healthy qi and pathogenic factors causes stifling sensations, pain-like discomfort, and other adverse feelings; these are actually good signs. Pathogens cannot overcome healthy qi and are about to be captured. One must endure patiently. During the alternating phases of wanting to vomit but not yet doing so, and wanting to purge but not yet doing so, there is a sense of constriction. One must accept this joyfully and calmly. This state lasts for about half a day. If not explained beforehand to ensure mental clarity, panic is inevitable. One month before undergoing this method, avoid sexual contact with women; for six months after, avoid sexual contact. For five years, avoid eating beef. Those with impatient temperaments, prone to lust, or who fail to observe taboos should not undergo this method. The key to the Dao Cang Method lies in the slow drinking of the first three *zhong*, which allows the medicine to enter the collaterals and tunnels.
The principle states: The intestines and stomach are like a market, containing everything, with grains being most abundant, hence called "Cang" (Granary). "Cang" refers to the room where grain is stored. "Dao" (Invert) means to pour out and wash clean. The Classics state: The Stomach is the official responsible for receiving and storing. Thus, the five flavors entering the mouth go into the Stomach. If toxic residues remain undispersed, long-term accumulation damages the harmonious balance, giving rise to various diseases. Now, using yellow intact male cow meat embodies profound meaning. The Ox corresponds to Kun Earth (Yin Earth); yellow is the color of the center/upper region. Its nature is compliant, yet it achieves efficacy through strength, representing the function of the male ox. Meat is medicine for the Stomach; cooked into liquid, it becomes formless. It spreads horizontally into muscles, penetrating from the intestines and stomach to the skin, hair, pores, and nails without exception. Long-term accumulation forms physical structures that adhere to the intestines and stomach, settling in convoluted and tortuous areas as nests for old turbidity, obstructing fluids and blood, causing steaming and burning leading to disease. Without the divine skill of opening bowels and scraping bones, who could remove it? How could pills and powders measured in tiny units penetrate its defenses? Beef possesses a rich, mellow, and compliant nature, nourishing dryness and revitalizing withered tissues, causing no harm. This prescription originated from an extraordinary person from the Western Regions. Practicing it once or twice after middle age is a helpful aid in dispelling illness and preserving longevity.
