(Attached: Heel Pain)
For Hongjiao (a disease characterized by swelling and heaviness of the lower legs and weakness), drugs with ascending and lifting properties must be used to raise and expel dampness. Medication should be prescribed according to the condition of Qi and Blood. In cases where Hongjiao attacks the Heart (pathogenic factors attacking the chest and heart), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with stir-fried Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) is suitable. Subsequently, it is advisable to apply a paste made from Fuzi (Aconite Root) powder mixed with saliva to the Yongquan acupoint (KI1, "Gushing Spring"), followed by moxibustion, to guide heat downward.
Formulas follow:
Fangji Yin (Stephania Decoction)
Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Mutong (Akebia Caulis), Fangji (Stephania Tetrandra), Binglang (Areca Seed), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Gancao Shao (Licorice Root Tip), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome, salt-stir-fried), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, wine-stir-fried), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root).
(Modifications: If stool is dry, add Taoren (Peach Kernel); if urination is difficult, add Duniuqi (Dipsacus Root); if there is heat, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome); if there is severe heat coinciding with hot seasons, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum); if there is phlegm, add Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice). For general swelling, the primary cause is damp-heat; the author has other specific formulas for this.)
Another formula, treating damp-heat, food stagnation, and phlegm flowing into collaterals.
Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Fangji (Stephania Tetrandra), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Binglang (Areca Seed).
If there is Blood deficiency, add Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) and Guiban (Tortoise Shell).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, make pills using wine paste, and take orally. For obese individuals, add phlegm-resolving drugs.
Jianbu Wan (Striding Pill)
Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root, 0.5 liang)
Guiwei (Angelica Sinensis Tail), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome) (each 1 liang), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit), Tiaoqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 0.5 liang), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root, 1 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 2 qian), Dafuzi (Betel Nut).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, make pills using steamed bread dough, sized like wu zi (wisteria seeds). Take 100 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, washed down with a decoction of Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) and Mutong (Akebia Caulis).
Another formula, treating a woman's swollen lower legs.
Honghua (Safflower), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) (both washed with wine), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Caolongdan (Gentiana Scabra Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome).
If tendons twitch at the big toe, extending up to the thigh near the waist causing knotting, this is due to rich nourishment combined with exposure to wind-cold. Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Honghua (Safflower), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) should be decocted and taken.
Damp-phlegm type Hongjiao, accompanied by loose stools.
Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome, 2 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 1 liang), Binglang (Areca Seed, 6 qian), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome, 8 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 6 qian), Tiaoqin (Scutellaria Root, 4 qian), Huashi (Talcum, 1 liang 2 qian).

Soft feet and painful tendons

Grind the above ingredients into powder. Make pills using wine paste.
Yingtong Wan (Pain-Relieving Pill), treating unbearable pain from Hongjiao. This medicine is a drastic agent.
Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root, 0.5 liang, roasted, skin removed), Caowu (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root, 0.5 liang, roasted, skin and tip removed).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, make pills using wine paste. Take 10 pills on an empty stomach, washed down with warm water.
Another formula, treating Hongjiao swelling and pain.
Jiezi (Mustard Seed), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) (equal parts).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with ginger juice, and apply externally as a plaster. Alternatively, grind Xianshu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), and Xixin (Asarum Root) into powder, put them inside cloth socks, and wear them.
Another formula, fumigation and washing for Hongjiao.
Weilingxian (Clematis Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Digupi (Phellodendron Root Bark), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Shuodi (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome - *Note: Text says 'Shu', likely referring to Shudi or similar herb, context suggests warming/blood-moving*).
Decoct these ingredients in water for fumigation and washing.
[Appendix] Hongjiao includes damp-heat patterns, food stagnation flowing into collaterals patterns, wind-damp patterns, and cold-damp patterns. To overcome dampness, use Xianshu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fangji (Stephania Tetrandra), and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) as main ingredients, or use Liuwu Fuzi Tang (Six-Ingredient Aconite Decoction) or Danggui Niantong Tang (Angelica Analgesic Decoction). For severe Qi stagnation in Hongjiao Qi, use Zhouche Wan (Boat Cart Pill) or Chushi Dan (Dampness-Removing Pill); if there is fluid retention, use Dongyuan Kaiejie Daoyin Wan (Dongyuan's Knot-Opening and Fluid-Guiding Pill). For releasing the exterior in Hongjiao, use Mahuang Zuojing Tang (Ephedra Left Meridian Decoction) and other medicines, selected according to the affected meridian. For cases complicated by phlegm, Qi stagnation, cold, and dampness, use Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) added with Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit). For simultaneous release of exterior and interior, use Dahuang Zuojing Tang (Rhubarb Left Meridian Decoction) or Dongyuan Qianghuo Daozhi Tang (Dongyuan's Notopterygium Stagnation-Guiding Decoction); for regulating blood, use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill), or Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root) and Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), or Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) and Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), or Jianbu Wan (Striding Pill); for dispelling wind and nourishing blood, Duohuo Jisheng Tang (Angelica Pubescens and Ginseng Decoction) is most effective.
