For patients with mouth ulcers (mouth sores) who have not recovered after taking cooling medicines, this is due to insufficiency of Qi in the Middle Jiao (the digestive system, primarily spleen and stomach), causing deficient fire to float upward without restraint. The treatment should utilize Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction); for severe cases, add Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). For mouth sores caused by excess heat, use Liangge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder), Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction), or Fuyan San (Attend Banquet Powder).
If there is erosion and ulceration of the mouth and tongue, rinse the mouth with a decoction prepared from the root of Rosa multiflora var. spontanea (Wild Rose Root). For conditions resulting from excessive sexual activity and drinking, fatigue, exhaustion, and insomnia, leading to a smooth, peeled appearance of the tongue, or for those whose middle Qi is damaged by excessive worry and overthinking, resulting in inability to sleep and physical exhaustion, use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) with added Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), and avoid cold beverages. If mouth sores are caused by deficiency of Spleen Earth in the Middle Jiao and an inability to eat, allowing Ministerial Fire (Xianghuo) to rush upward unimpeded, use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) are used to tonify the deficiency of Earth; Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) is used to disperse the fire; for severe cases, add Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). Another prescription involves grinding Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), and Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) into powder and holding it in the mouth. To treat white rot covering the entire mouth: take Bi Bo (Long Pepper Fruit, 1 liang) and Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, 1 liang, pan-fried), grind into powder, boil in rice vinegar for several boils, then mix in the above powder and rinse the mouth. After a while, rinse with warm water to achieve cure; severe cases may require two treatments. For a person with sores on the upper lip, apply petals of white lotus flower to the affected area. To treat double tongue (re-she), grind high-quality Dan Fan (Alum) finely and apply it to the site. Alternatively, use Man Jing Zi Tang (Vitex Decoction). When blood is weak, Yin fluid is deficient, and Yang fire is hyperactive, causing dilation of the pupil and impaired vision with blurriness, use Shu Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill), also known as Zi Yin Di Huang Wan (Nourish Yin Rehmannia Pill). For sudden onset of redness and swelling of the eyes, use Shouzhen San (Guard Truth Powder) or Re Yin Zi (Hot Drink). If accompanied by constipation, add Da Huang (Rhubarb Root); if painful, add Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) and Di Huang (Rehmannia Root); if irritable with little sleep, add Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit). For chronic eye disorders that flare up, moxa-ignite the point at the end of the transverse crease on the lateral side of the big toenail, seven moxa cones, then stop; afterwards, drink honey water mixed with yellow earth.
Sang Piao Xiao (Mantis Egg Case) is hung to dry, ground into powder, and blown into the nasal cavity. To resolve fish bones stuck in the throat: mix Bai Sha Tang (White Rock Sugar), Bai Tan Hui (White Charcoal Ash), Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf), and Hua Shi (Talcum Powder) into pills, wrap in cotton, hold in the mouth, swallow saliva, and the bone will naturally descend.
Throat obstruction (Hou Bi) is mostly caused by phlegm-heat. Treatment involves holding a slice of Li Shi Gen (Plum Root) in the mouth. Additionally, crush Li Shi Gen (Plum Root) to extract juice and apply it to the neck once; effectiveness is immediate. Li Shi Gen (Plum Root) must be freshly harvested from gardens. For severe cases, induce vomiting using Tong You (Tung Oil). Another method uses She Gan (Belamcanda Rhizome) combined with reverse-flowing water to induce vomiting. Throat wind (Chan Hou Feng), belonging to phlegm-heat syndrome, should be treated by inducing vomiting with Tung Oil using a goose feather. To treat sore throat, decoct Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) for gargling and ingestion. For dry and painful throat, use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome); relief is immediate. For hot and painful throat, use Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) with added Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike). If heat signs are present, add Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) and Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit); for unilateral headache, continuous runny nose, and sore throat, use Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) with added Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), Bo He (Mint), Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit), and Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem); recovery occurs through sweating after administration. If swelling is unilateral, add Zi Su (Perilla Leaf); this applies when Wind-Cold in winter stagnates on one side.
