Zhibao Ointment is highly effective for treating sudden fever and heat accumulation causing eyelid pterygium. The prescription consists of: Ruren (Seed of Prunus Persica, removed of oil) 1 qian, Pengsha (Borax) 1 qian, Chensha (Cinnabar) 3 fen, Bingpian (Borneol) 1 fen. Grind these ingredients into an extremely fine powder, mix with honey, and apply to the eyes.
For treating ulcerative blepharitis (rotten eye orbits), use Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) in equal parts. Grind into a coarse powder, burn to obtain ash, and apply to the eyes. The method is similar to burning incense: cover the ash with a small green bowl coated with a little honey, wait until the ash cools and solidifies, then store in a porcelain vessel. This can be applied to any eye condition characterized by wind-heat and excessive tearing.
Pingfeng Zhile San (Wind-Calming and Tearing-Stopping Powder) has the following verse: "Wind-heat causes tears and pain; Cang'erzi, Xiangfu, Chuanxiong, Xixin, Heluoye, Baizhi stop it; Muzei, Xiakucao, Fangfeng, Gancao calm it; decocting and drinking brings peace."
Another eye-drop formula uses Hanshuishi (Aragonite). Crush the stone, soak in urine of a healthy boy for seven days, sun-dry for seven days, soak again for seven days, then grind into powder. For every 1 liang of powder, add 5 fen of Zhen Qingfen (Calomel), grind extremely fine, expose to night dew for seven nights, sun-dry for seven days. Before use, add a little Bingpian (Borneol) and apply to the eyes.
For eye diseases caused by Blood deficiency, use Shengshu Dihuang Wan (Raw and Prepared Rehmannia Pill): Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) each 2 liang, Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) 1 liang, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 1 liang. Grind into powder and make pills with honey. In winter, if eyes suddenly become painful, dispersal methods should be used; cold-natured medicines must not be employed. For pterygium on the cornea (Heijing), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) are used. For eye pain, Zhimu and Huangbai clear Kidney fire, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) nourishes Yin, and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) acts as a guiding herb. For wind-stroke in the eyes causing tearing, swallow several pills of Longhui Wan (Pellet of Dragon Gallbladder) after meals, three times daily.
One patient suffered from eye disease that flared up in spring and summer; this should be treated as Qi Stagnation (Yu Zheng): Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 liang (soaked in wine), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) 2 liang (processed with ginger), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) each 2 liang (soaked in urine), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 2 liang, Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) 1 liang (stir-fried), Daoxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome soaked in urine) 1.5 liang, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 0.5 liang (soaked in wine), Caolongdan (Gentianae Radix) 0.5 liang (steamed in wine), Luobo (Raphani Fructus) 0.5 liang, Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) 0.5 liang, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 3 qian. Grind into powder and make pills with Shenqu paste.
One patient had sunken eyeballs: Shengdi 1 jin, Shudi 1 jin, Xingren (Armeniacae Semen) 4 liang, Shihu 0.5 jin, Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 0.5 jin, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 6 liang, Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) 5 liang. Make honeyed pills and take orally.
To treat sudden swelling and pain due to Blood Heat stagnation, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Caolongdan, Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fangfeng, and Qianghuo. For dry and ulcerative eye orbits caused by Wind, use Wind-dispelling herbs to dry dampness.
Chaihu San (Bupleurum Powder): Chaihu, Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Shengdihuang, ChiShaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Jingjie. For internal cataracts and dim vision caused by overwork and irregular diet, use Manjingzi Tang (Vitex Fruit Decoction). To treat internal cataracts, use Siwu Tang plus Jiu Chao Huangqin, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Huangbai, along with lozenge medicines: Shuangmei (Preserved Plum), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Baifan (Alumen) made into pills, wrapped in cotton and held in the mouth to dissolve.
For Bi Syndrome of the throat (Hou Bi), place a white plum inside a house centipede (Youyan) until it dissolves, then hold the plum in the mouth. For wind-heat Hou Bi, first use Qianmian Tang, then Siwu Tang plus Huangbai and Zhimu; nourishing Yin will subdue the fire. Another formula uses Zhu Ya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) powder and Shuangmei made into pills for holding in the mouth. Another formula uses Qiancao (Rubiae Cordifoliae Radix) 1 liang as a single dose to descend fire in the blood. Another formula: Yanxiao (Natrii Nitras) 0.5 qian, Kufan (Calcined Alumen) 1 qian, Pengsha 1 qian, ground into fine powder, taken with juice extracted from Du Niuxi (Achyranthes bidentata stem).
Runhou San (Throat-Moistening Powder) treats night fever, dry throat, and choking sensation due to Qi Stagnation: Jiegeng 2.5 qian, Fencacao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, Ziheche (Human Placenta) 4 qian, Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma) 3 qian, Baiyaojian (Fermented Tea Pill) 1.5 qian. Grind into fine powder and apply to the inside of the mouth. If sores form in the throat and break, do not use Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum) because its pungency increases pain and prevents healing. For sore throat, Jingjie is essential; if caused by Deficient Fire flaming upward, Xuanshen is essential. For sore throat, Pengsha can be mixed with Danfan (Melanterium), Jiangcan, and Baifan into powder, combined with Shuangmei pulp, and held in the mouth.
To treat all types of sore throat, use Daozha Ci Gen (Root of Rhamnus davurica), wash clean, grind with a little good vinegar, and drip into the throat and ears; relief comes when itching stops. Sores and pain in the throat belong to Heat, often caused by uncontrolled wandering Deficient Fire lodging in the throat. For Excess Fire, use Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Honey-fried Huangbai, and Jingjie; for Deficient Fire, use Renshen and Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). For Heat, use Huanglian, Jingjie, Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), and Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitratis Crystal), mixed with honey and held in the mouth. For Blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang plus Zhuli.
To treat Hou Bi where nasal blood threads hang down forming small blood clots in the throat, use Du Niuxi (specifically the straight, single-stemmed Achyranthes root), crush it, grind with a little good rice vinegar, extract the juice, and drip 3-5 drops into the nose to rupture the clot.
A fat person who consumes rich food and alcohol, often suffering from sore throat, nasal congestion, and phlegmy cough due to fatigue, should use Liangge San (Cool the Chest Powder) plus Jiegeng, Jingjie, Nanxing, and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus).
Du Qingbi Tongshen San (Du Qingbi's Spirit-Communicating Powder) is very effective for expelling Wind-Phlegm in Hou Bi; see the "Wind" section. For Hou Feng (Wind-Throat) expectoration, use Jiangcan, Ya Zao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), and Baifan ground into powder, mixed with Huangji Zhi (Pickled Mustard Green Juice) to induce vomiting by tickling the throat. Acupuncture method: prick Shaoshang (LU11) with a three-edged needle to release blood for immediate cure.
