Postpartum, the stomach and intestines are weak and fragile, making them susceptible to invasion by cold pathogens. If one consumes cold drinks or is exposed to wind before the completion of one month postpartum, the pathogen may take advantage of the deficiency to invade and remain in the epiploic appendages (membranous tissues wrapping the abdominal organs), dispersing into the abdomen and hypochondrium. Consequently, paroxysmal abdominal pain occurs, feeling as if pierced by awls or knives. If the pathogen flows into the large intestine, causing food and fluids to remain undigested, it leads to profuse diarrhea, borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), or the passage of red and white mucus, accompanied by distension in the hypochondrium. In such cases, Tiaozhong Decoction should be taken immediately for a prompt recovery. If physicians mistakenly attribute these symptoms to food stagnation and employ purgative methods, disaster will follow swiftly; caution is paramount, caution is paramount.
Xue Lizhai stated: Diarrhea and dysentery occurring postpartum may result from dietary injury to the Spleen Earth, or from Spleen Earth deficiency failing to digest food. Treatment must be based on careful differentiation. If injured by rice consumption, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Gu Ya (Sprouted Rice) should be used; if injured by wheat products, Liu Jun Zi Tang with Mai Ya (Sprouted Wheat) should be used; if injured by meat consumption, Liu Jun Zi Tang with Shan Zha (Crataegus Fruit) and Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) should be used. For cases complicated by vomiting, Huo Xiang (Patchouli Herb) should be added. If acid regurgitation or vomiting is present, the aforementioned herbs should be taken with Yue Ju Wan (Yueju Pill). In cases where Liver Wood overacts on Spleen Earth (Liver Qi invading the Stomach), Liu Jun Zi Tang with Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) and Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) should be used. In cases where Cold Water counter-acts Spleen Earth (Kidney Cold invading the Spleen), Qian Shi Yi Huang San (Qianshi's Yellow Protecting Powder) should be used. For prolonged diarrhea leading to sinking of Yuan Qi (Original Qi), Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Si Shen Wan (Four Spirits Pill) should be used. For Ming Men Fire Deficiency failing to warm Spleen Earth, Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) should be used to tonify the mother of Spleen Earth (tonify Kidney Yang). If urinary difficulty and gradual swelling of the limbs occur, possibly accompanied by wheezing and coughing, Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Golden Cabinet Kidney Qi Pill) should be used.
Deqi San (Miraculous Odd Powder)
Treats postpartum residual blood infiltrating the large intestine, manifesting as uncontrollable profuse diarrhea with green, white, or black stools.
Take four or five spikes of large Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), burn them to ash in a small cup, ensuring no oil or fire contamination. Add a small amount of She Xiang (Musk), grind together, and take with decoction, divided into three doses. Although this prescription is mild, it can treat serious conditions.

Use light vinegar and millet drink as binders to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 30–40 pills per dose with boiling water. For chronic dysentery with sinking of Middle Qi, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
