Cough may arise from floating wind, tight cold, rapid heat, fine dampness, sexual exhaustion, or obstruction/difficulty. A soft-rheum pulse at the right guan position indicates spleen injury due to dietary damage; a wiry-short pulse at the left guan position indicates liver decline due to extreme fatigue; a floating-short pulse indicates lung injury, which according to medical principles should present as cough. For coughs of the five zang organs, observe the corresponding local pulse positions. Floating-tight pulses indicate wind-cold; deep-rapid pulses indicate excess heat; surging-slippery pulses indicate much phlegm; wiry-choppy pulses indicate blood deficiency; a robust physique with a thin pulse, inability to breathe normally, and deep-rare or hidden pulses are all signs of death. Only those with a floating-large pulse accompanied by cough have a chance of survival. External symptoms and internal pulses must be correlated to assess the balance of the condition. Spring is characterized by ascending qi; summer features fire blazing upward most severely; autumn involves damp-heat injuring the lungs; winter involves external invasion of wind-cold.
Another prescription: Treats phlegm-cough. This refers to cases where cough is accompanied by phlegm, and the cough ceases once the phlegm is expectorated.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) Fuling (Poria) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen) Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed, stir-fried). Use equal amounts for all. In spring, add Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica); in summer, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Lianhua (Nelumbinis Nuciferae Flos) or Lianzi (Nelumbinis Nuciferae Plumula) - *Note: 'Qin Lian' usually refers to Huangqin and Huanglian, but context implies clearing summer heat/fire*.
Add 2 zhong of water and 3 slices of fresh ginger to the above herbs. Decoct and take.
Another prescription: Treats cough triggered by cold exposure, indicating phlegm above the diaphragm. Hoarseness also belongs to cold patterns; this is sudden cold-induced cough, suitable for adding Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) to disperse it.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) Fuling (Poria) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) Pianqin (Scutellariae Radix, stir-fried) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis).
