For patients suffering from stroke (Zhong Feng), this prescription should be administered first to regulate Qi. After the Qi is smoothed, wind-dispelling medicines should then be taken.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). For each dose of six qian, decoct with one cup of water until half a cup remains, and take warm. Simultaneously, dissolve Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) in wine and take it alternately.
To treat stroke where there are no exterior manifestations of the Six Channels (Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin), and no internal obstruction of urination or defecation, if it is known to be due to Blood deficiency, causing weakness that fails to nourish the sinews, resulting in inability to move the limbs and stiffness of the tongue preventing speech, one should nourish the Blood so that the sinews naturally become prosperous.
Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each 2 liang), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian).
To treat stroke where there are exterior manifestations of the Six Channels, first treat according to the syndrome using Jia Jian Xu Ming Tang (Modified Life-Sustaining Decoction). If there is internal obstruction of urination or defecation, use this formula to guide and resolve it.
Nong Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (prepared with ginger), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (equal parts).
Cut the herbs. For each dose of 3 liang, decoct with three sheng of water until one and a half sheng remains. Take throughout the day until slight diarrhea occurs, then stop. If the internal pathogenic factors have been cleared and the external pathogenic factors exhausted, one should switch to Yu Feng Tang (Wind-Dispelling Decoction) to regulate the middle pathway. Long-term consumption will eliminate major wind pathogens; even if minor pathogens remain, they can be treated by modifying Yu Feng Tang. However, the method of treatment must not deviate from the principles of unblocking and obstructing. Sometimes a slight sweat induced over one qi period, or unblocking purgation over ten days, constitutes the routine method. Over time, clear and turbid Qi will separate naturally, and Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) will harmonize.
To treat deficiency of the Liver and Kidney, weakness of sinews and bones, difficulty in speech, and mental confusion; as well as to treat internal weakness due to Wind-Dampness, heaviness of the body due to Wind-Heat, emaciation with hemiplegia of one limb, or obesity with hemiplegia of half the body. When the Heart is disturbed, hundred diseases arise; when calm, ten thousand diseases cease. This medicine can calm the Heart and nourish the Spirit, regulating Yin and Yang without excess or deficiency.
