The Maijue (Pulse Classic) states: Deep (Chen), Wiry (Xian), Fine (Xi), and Agitated (Dong) pulses are all indicative of Pain syndromes. Heart pain manifests at the Cun position, abdominal pain at the Guan position, lower body pain at the Chi position; the pulse signs are clear. Even for Wei-wan pain (epigastric pain), although eating may not be hindered, after treatment stops the pain, one should not eat immediately; if pain recurs upon eating, two or three doses must be taken. Zhenxin tong (True Heart Pain) leads to death from morning to evening and is untreatable. When pain is severe enough that lips and mouth turn cyanotic/black, the pulse will likely be hidden (Fu); use warming medicines, do not use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). Furthermore, for heart and abdominal pain, the pulse will necessarily present as Deep, Fine, Floating, or Large.
