Original Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction), add two liang of Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*). The above three ingredients are boiled in four sheng of water. First, boil Zizi (Fructus Gardeniae) and Gancao until half a sheng is reduced; then add Chi Xiao Dou (Prepared Soybean, *Sojae Semen Praeparatum*) and boil until one and a half sheng remains. Divide into two doses. Take one dose warm. If vomiting occurs, discontinue further administration.
Original Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction), add five liang of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*). First boil Zizi (Fructus Gardeniae) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome); the remaining steps follow the previous method. If vomiting occurs, discontinue further administration.
For all cases using Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction), if the patient has a history of loose stools, it should not be administered. This serves as a warning for the use of Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction).
Commentary: Zizi (Fructus Gardeniae) clears fire from the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) and does not significantly harm the intestines and stomach. Yet, it is contraindicated in those with slight loose stools; the rationale is unclear. It is hypothesized that this is because the Qi of the Large Intestine is slipping and unconsolidated, and the Lung Qi should not be dispersed further, which might exacerbate the deficiency.
If there is shortness of breath (Shao Qi), Zhi Zi Gan Cao Chi Tang (Gardenia, Licorice, and Prepared Soybean Decoction) is the primary formula. Gancao (Licorice Root) can tonify Middle Qi (Spleen/Stomach Qi). If there is vomiting, Zhi Zi Sheng Jiang Chi Tang (Gardenia, Fresh Ginger, and Prepared Soybean Decoction) is the primary formula. These two clauses indicate that for any condition requiring Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction), if either of these two symptoms appears, these two specific herbs are added accordingly.
Commentary: "Ou" refers to the sensation of nausea or retching without expulsion, while "Tu" refers to actual vomiting with expulsion. To stop vomiting, one induces vomiting instead. After vomiting, the nausea ceases, which is truly beyond ordinary comprehension.
Zizi (Fructus Gardeniae) (14 fruits, broken open) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, *Zingiberis Rhizoma*) (two liang). The above two ingredients are boiled in three and a half sheng of water until one and a half sheng remains. Strain the dregs and divide into two doses. Take one dose warm. If vomiting occurs, discontinue further administration.
In Shaoyang disease (Taiyang Cold Damage), the physician used pill medicines for severe purgation. Purgation itself may not have been erroneous, but using pill medicines for severe purgation was a mistake. The body heat persists, indicating slight exterior pathogenic factors remain. Slight vexation indicates post-purgation vexation, which is empty vexation (Xu Fan). Zhi Zi Gan Jiang Tang (Gardenia and Dried Ginger Decoction) is the primary formula; Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) is used because the bowels have been purged.
Zizi (Fructus Gardeniae) (14 fruits, broken open) Houpo (Magnolia Bark, *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*) (four liang, processed with ginger juice) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, *Citri Reticulatae Viridis Fructus*) (four pieces, soaked in water, outer skin removed, stir-fried). The decoction and administration methods are the same as above.
In Taiyang Cold Damage, after purgation, there is vexation, manifesting as slight vexation. Abdominal fullness, with restlessness in lying down and sitting up: when vexation is combined with abdominal fullness, both lying down and sitting up become uncomfortable. Houpo (Magnolia Bark) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit) are used to treat abdominal fullness. Zhi Zi Hou Po Tang (Gardenia, Magnolia Bark, and Immature Bitter Orange Decoction) is the primary formula.
