Shangshi Fadan (Erysipelas caused by food stagnation) arises because the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is not yet robust. Excessive intake of milk and food leads to an inability to transform and transport, causing heat to accumulate internally and manifest on the muscle surface. If caused by stagnation of milk and food, first use Baohe Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill) to resolve the stagnation; if accompanied by constipation, add Rhubarb (Da Huang) in appropriate amounts to promote bowel movement. Once the food stagnation is resolved but the erysipelas persists, treat with Qingzhong Jieyu Tang (Clear Middle and Resolve Depression Decoction). After the erysipelas pathogen is eliminated but the child still lacks appetite, use Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Powder for Enhancing Merit) to tonify. If fever and thirst occur, or there is poor appetite, use Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) to tonify.
Generally, erysipelas caused by rich and greasy diet presents with red halos and spreads slowly. If caused by drinking distilled spirits or accidentally ingesting Xishi (Arsenic mineral), the entire body is covered with red halos that spread very rapidly. In cases of sores and ulcers erupting with surrounding red halos, symptoms subside naturally as heat dissipates or pus discharges. All such conditions contraindicate Bianfa (Bloodletting with stone needle); the primary treatment should be to stabilize the interior, avoiding aggressive purgative methods. If spontaneous vomiting and diarrhea occur, they should not be forcibly stopped, as these processes contain a dispersive nature. For cases caused by drinking distilled spirits, drinking one or two cups of cold rice vinegar can detoxify, which is a miraculous method.
If the infant suffers due to the mother consuming excessive roasted and fatty foods, drinking alcohol, taking pungent-hot drying herbs, or suffering from emotional depression damaging the Liver and Spleen, it should be treated according to the principles for fetal heat toxic sores.
One child had a face alternating between red and pale, with cold hands and feet, suffering from erysipelas due to food stagnation. I attributed this to Spleen-Stomach deficiency. The parents did not believe me and used another purgative formula, resulting in worsened vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, spitting saliva, refusal to nurse, and mouth/tongue ulcers. This indicated further injury to the Spleen-Stomach, leading to deficiency-cold repelling Yang Qi to the exterior, rather than excess heat. I first used Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang), followed by Wuyi Yigong San, leading to recovery.
Another child developed red halos every time food stagnated, indicating Spleen deficiency with food depression. I cured him with Qingzhong Jieyu Tang. A month later, he suddenly shook his head, ground his teeth, had excessive phlegm, and suffered convulsions with vomiting of sour/rotten food. This was food depression injuring the Spleen. After waiting for him to vomit out all the stagnation, I gave a small amount of Baizhu San the next day, leading to recovery. Continued use of the previous powder prevented recurrence for over a month.
Another child had food stagnation with constipation and red limbs, indicating accumulation of toxic heat from diet inside. I used Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit), and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), which resolved the constipation and redness. Later, dizziness and cough appeared, indicating Spleen Qi deficiency failing to generate Lung Metal (Earth failing to nourish Metal). I used Liujunzi Tang with Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) to tonify Spleen and Lung, and Shanzha and Shenqu to digest food, leading to cure.
One child, after taking exterior-releasing agents, suffered limb convulsions; after taking Jingfeng (Convulsion-calming) medicines, phlegm increased severely. I reasoned this was a deficiency pattern where Spleen-Stomach damage allowed Liver Wood to overact. There was no wind to dispel nor phlegm to purge. One dose of Liujunzi Tang stabilized the condition, and two doses led to improvement.
Another child, after taking purgative agents for food stagnation, developed erysipelas with vomiting and abdominal distension, indicating renewed injury to Spleen Qi. I cured him with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Wuyi Yigong San.
One child, whose mother consumed roasted foods and alcohol/flour products, developed diffuse swelling on both anterior arms. Each swelling had a base surrounded by red halos. I stated the affected area belongs to the Stomach Meridian, caused by accumulated heat in the Stomach Meridian. I treated with Qingwei San (Clear the Stomach Powder) and Xiehuang San (Drain Yellow Powder), resolving the swelling. Had it been mistaken for Dan Du (Erysipelas toxin) and treated with bloodletting and detoxifying drugs, it would have accelerated the critical condition.
One child, whose mother drank distilled spirits, had a body red like erysipelas. Within three days, the skin ulcerated everywhere, with irritability, fever, and thirst for cold drinks. I administered cold rice vinegar, bringing immediate peace. Subsequently, Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower) and Gancao (Licorice Root) powder cured him.
One child suffering from malaria took medicine containing Xishi, resulting in whole-body redness and pain, irritability, and confusion. I slowly灌 (poured/administered) one cup of rice vinegar, reviving him. After a while, his body returned to normal. Then, using Jin Yin Hua and Gancao powdered, taken one qian per dose mixed with rice vinegar, three doses brought stability.
A five-year-old child suddenly vomited and had diarrhea. Within moments, redness appeared on the chest and abdomen, spreading to the entire body. I suspected poisoning from Xishi, as fetal tumors or food toxins do not present this rapidly. I administered one cup of cold rice vinegar; vomiting and diarrhea stopped immediately. The redness gradually receded within minutes. He revived after half a day, though his form resembled death. Finally, using Sheep Blood (Yang Xue) to reconnect his Yuan Qi (Original Qi), he recovered.
