Convulsive disease (Jingfeng) and scrofula (Jiehe) belong to the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, caused by the dominance of Wind-Wood Qi and Ministerial Fire. When Liver Wood is excessive, it generates Wind-Heat, which combines to transform into pathogenic factors, leading to convulsions and restlessness. This is due to Wind-Fire and Blood Dryness. Generally, when Wind moves, Liver Fire becomes hyperactive; when Liver Fire is hyperactive, it consumes Liver Blood internally. Since Blood cannot nourish the tendons, tendon contraction and nodules resembling a string of beads occur. However, the sides of the neck are precisely the areas governed by the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Treatment should focus on nourishing Kidney Water, clearing Liver Fire, nourishing Yin-Blood, and strengthening Spleen Earth. Because when Kidney Water is abundant, Liver Fire clears naturally; when Liver Fire clears, Yin-Blood regenerates naturally; when Yin-Blood regenerates, Ministerial Fire calms naturally; once Fire is calm, there will be no diseases where Heat damages Yuan-Qi or Fire attacks the position of Earth.
A child developed neck nodules after being startled, with blinking eyes, twitching lips, head shaking, and convulsions. This indicates Wood overacting on Earth. Gradual recovery was achieved using Zaojiaozi Wan (Soap Nut Pill) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), followed by complete cure with Jiwei Lushui Wan (Nine-Ingredient Aloe Pill).
A one-year-old child presented with neck nodules and hyperextension of both arms, requesting detoxifying medicines. I reasoned this belonged to Liver Meridian Blood Dryness. Upon inquiry, it was confirmed that the child had previously suffered from convulsive disease and had taken Cinnabar (Zhusha) and other medicines. Therefore, Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) was prescribed to nourish Liver Blood, resulting in cure after several doses.
A child with lateral neck nodules, profuse phlegm, and convulsions took mineral-based aromatic-drying agents, leading to tendon contraction of hands and feet. This indicated further injury to Liver Blood, constituting Acute Convulsive Disease (Ji Jing). Thus, JiaWei Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was used, augmented with Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui). Additionally, Liuyi Wan ingredients were added with Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) and Ophiopogonis Radix (Maimendong), leading to recovery.
A child developed neck nodules, fever, and reduced appetite upon every startle, with slight limb convulsions during sleep. This represents Wood insulting Earth. Recovery occurred promptly using Wuyi Gong San (Five-Flavor Yi Gong Powder) augmented with Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), and Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng). Later, after marriage, nodules appeared on the legs, arms, and wrists. Mistakenly taking Qi-moving and Blood-breaking medicines led to tendon contraction of limbs and emaciation resembling Tuberculosis (Zai Zheng). During my official review in Beijing, I used Dihuang Wan to generate Liver-Kidney Blood, assisted by Buzhong Yiqi Tang to tonify Spleen-Lung Qi, resulting in cure.
A child with pre-auricular and post-auricular nodules experienced profuse phlegm, teeth grinding, convulsions, and head shaking upon startle. Strict use of aromatic-drying medicines led to Chronic Convulsive Disease (Man Jing) and death.
