Because the Kidney position in women is connected to the Bao Palace (uterus), and the waist is the external mansion of the Kidney, postpartum labor injures Kidney Qi, damaging the Bao Collaterals. Alternatively, wind pathogens may invade when the body is deficient and has not yet recovered.
Yangrong Zhuangshen Tang (Nourishing Glory and Strengthening Kidney Decoction): Treats postpartum contraction of wind-cold, resulting in severe lower back pain that prevents turning or moving.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (2 qian), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (4 fen), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae), Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci), Sangjisheng (Ramulus Taxilli) (each 8 fen).
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct with water and take orally. If pain persists after two doses, it indicates Kidney deficiency; add Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) 3 qian.
Another version includes Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) 8 fen.
Jiawei Dazao Wan (Modified Great Creation Pill): Treats prolonged postpartum condition characterized by dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, lower back pain, and weak Kidneys. See the section on "Bone-steaming" for the formula.
Qing'e Wan (Blue Mule Pill):
Hetao (Semen Juglandis) (12 pieces), Pogu zhi (Fructus Psoraleae) (8 liang, soaked in wine and stir-fried), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) (1 jin, stir-fried with ginger juice, removing fibrous strands).
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills. Take 60 pills, delivered with a light vinegar decoction.
Marginal note: Another version uses 20 pieces of Hetao.
Verse: Postpartum lower back pain makes turning difficult; Yangrong Zhuangshen will naturally dispel the pain.
The formula contains Danggui, Fangfeng, Duzhong, and Guixin, along with Duhuo, Sangjisheng, Shengjiang, and Xuduan.
The verified prescription for lower back pain, Qing'e Wan, consists of Hetao, Duzhong, and Pogu zhi.
It strengthens the waist, tonifies the Kidney, and fortifies sinews and bones; delivering with light vinegar enhances efficacy.
This is due to Blood deficiency and Qi stagnation in the Liver Meridian. For Qi stagnation, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri); for Blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chaihu, Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). If one indiscriminately uses aromatic and drying herbs, it will instead damage the clear and harmonious Qi, leaving no source for generation.
Bufei San (Lung-Nourishing Powder): Treats hypochondriac pain.
Shanyu (Fructus Corni), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Wuwei (Fructus Schisandrae), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Zaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) (equal parts).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Marginal note: Another version specifies: Shanyu 2 qian, Danggui 2 qian, Wuwei 10 berries, Huangqi 8 fen, Chuanxiong 6 fen, Shudi 1.5 qian, Mugua and Baizhu each 1 qian, Duhuo 8 fen, Zaoren 1 qian, Shengjiang 1 slice. It lacks Shanyao; retain for reference.
Verse: Bufei San treats hypochondriac pain, containing Shanyu, Shanyao, Danggui, and Chuanxiong.
Also Wuwei, Mugua, and Duhuo, combined with Baizhu, Zaoren, and Shudi.
