This is specifically for treating conditions where the upright Qi (vital energy) is deficient and pathogenic factors have invaded. For example, when headache and fever occur, and the pulse at the right Cun position (radial artery location corresponding to the Lung and Heart) is larger than that at the left Cun position, administering this prescription urgently will invariably lead to recovery. The formula used is Fuzheng Sanxie Tang (Upright-Boosting and Pathogen-Dispersing Decoction): Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian). Decoct with water and take orally.
If it is food stagnation, there must be a sensation of fullness and oppression in the heart region, aversion to seeing food, and increased pain after eating. The formula used is: Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 1 qian), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus, 20 seeds), Gu Ya (Setariae Fructus Germinatus, 2 qian), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, 2 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 1 qian), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus, 3 grains), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen). Decoct with water and take orally. Symptoms improve after one dose, and recovery occurs after two doses.
If it is summerheat injury, there will inevitably be dizziness, thirst, and aversion to heat. In severe cases, there may be excessive phlegm, body fever, and panting. The formula used is: Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 1 liang), Xiang Ru (Elsholtziae Herba, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian). Decoct with water and take orally. Adding Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian) is optional; without it is also acceptable. Recovery occurs after one dose.
In the early stage of dryness disease, there are dry throat and mouth, no expectoration, incessant dry cough, redness of the face and eyes, and no aversion to wind. The formula used is: Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 5 qian), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 5 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 1 qian), Bai Bu (Stemonae Radix, 8 fen). This is a variant syndrome of Shanghan (Cold Damage). When the fire pathogen of Shanghan is raging, one should not rush to consume food. If this syndrome arises due to improper diet, the formula used is: Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus, one fruit, crushed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian). Decoct with water and take orally.
Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus) is the supreme medicine for treating Jie Xiong (Chest Binding, a condition characterized by the binding of heat and phlegm-water in the chest/diaphragm). When ordinary people take it, they inevitably feel as if their spirit has been lost; allowing patients to take it, could one not fear it might cause deficiency? However, one does not know that in Jie Xiong syndrome, food is stuck in the chest. It cannot be dispelled or driven out by Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), or Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex). Only with Gua Lou can the spleen's stagnation be pushed open. Adding a small amount of Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to harmonize it prevents the action from being excessively fierce.
