The body has no significant high fever. The base of the pox is sparse, the roots are red and blooming, there is no diarrhea or thirst, milk and food intake remain unchanged, the four limbs are warm, the voice is clear and bright, the spirit is normal, and the pulse is harmonious and moderate. This belongs to a favorable syndrome (smooth progression of disease), which will heal spontaneously without medication. As for unfavorable syndromes (dangerous progression of disease): coughing with hoarseness and difficulty in swallowing food and drink constitute the first evil sign; abdominal distension with shortness of breath, restlessness and agitation constitute the second evil sign; incessant thirst and diarrhea, teeth grinding and chills constitute the third evil sign; tender pox that easily rupture and unceasing itching constitute the fourth evil sign; purple, black, or gray coloration with sunken tops, panting and thirst constitute the fifth evil sign. If urgent treatment is administered according to the aforementioned methods, eight or nine out of ten patients can still be saved. Do not abandon treatment simply because the condition appears dire. Furthermore, there are seven errors that cause mild conditions to become severe: 1. Failure to avoid raw, cold, slippery, and greasy foods, causing injury to the Spleen and Stomach; 2. Previous diarrhea leading to interior deficiency, unable to push toxins outward; 3. Overuse of exterior-releasing medicines or failure to avoid wind and cold, damaging the exterior Qi; 4. Use of cooling medicines and reckless use of purgatives for interior excess, causing interior Qi deficiency and cold, preventing toxin expulsion; 5. Exposure to foul odors (see "Discussion on Smallpox Vaccination"). Generally, blood and Qi flow smoothly when exposed to fragrant scents but逆流 (reverse) when exposed to foul smells; smooth flow facilitates eruption and crusting, while reverse flow hinders healing; 6. Frequent visits by strangers, and contact with monks, nuns, or those wearing mourning clothes; 7. Violating house taboos. Conversely, severe conditions may turn mild, and misfortune into fortune, provided five precautions are observed: 1. Carefully avoid wind and cold; 2. Keep the body consistently warm; add clothing if cold, remove if hot, aiming for balance, avoiding excess or deficiency; 3. Regulate diet, strictly avoiding cold items like watermelon, persimmon, orange, water chestnut, and honey, which may injure Stomach Qi internally, as well as fatty/greasy foods that cause slippery intestines and diarrhea, sour/salty foods that induce thirst, and pungent/fishy foods like wine, green onion, garlic, fish, and mutton that cause itching; ensure the Spleen and Stomach are robust so pox erupt and crust easily; 4. Maintain regular bowel movements and balanced diet to prevent diarrhea; once daily is considered regulated, two to three times daily is considered free; if urgent need arises, use sweet-warm Spleen-tonifying herbs. During the pus-filling stage, even if there is no bowel movement for three to four days, do not mistakenly diagnose it as constipation; 5. Follow proper regulation: tonify Qi and Blood, protect the Spleen and Stomach, avoid wind and cold, regulate diet, do not induce sweating recklessly, do not purge recklessly. In this way, severe conditions can become mild, and unfavorable conditions favorable, hopefully preventing mild conditions from becoming severe.
