It is stated that teeth are the external manifestation of the Kidney (Shen), and the mouth is the orifice of the Spleen (Pi). Many meridians converge in the mouth. The teeth are traversed by the Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming meridians. The upper gums belong to Kun Earth (referring to the Spleen and Stomach) and are connected by the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian; their characteristic is stillness and immobility. The lower gums move ceaselessly during chewing and are connected by the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. The Hand-Yangming meridian dislikes cold drinks and prefers heat, whereas the Foot-Yangming meridian prefers cold drinks and dislikes heat. Their pathologies vary. As the external manifestation of the Kidney, teeth also favor cold, as cold ensures firmness and stability. Due to differing pathological causes, treatments differ. Some suffer pain due to aversion to heat; some due to aversion to cold; some due to aversion to both cold and heat; some due to aversion to cold but drinking small amounts of hot water or large amounts of hot water; some due to aversion to heat but drinking small amounts of cold water or large amounts of cold water; some due to tooth mobility; some due to swollen and protruding gums; some due to Wind-Evil in the Spleen and Stomach, feeling only wind-induced pain; others have teeth eroded by worms, resulting in missing teeth and color changes, known as worm-toothache; some have pain because Qi deficiency in the Stomach fails to protect exposed teeth from cold; some have painful teeth accompanied by foul odor that is unbearable. Since pains vary so much, how can a single medicine treat all cases?
