Astragali Radix (reduce by five fen if sweating is scanty) Atractylodis Rhizoma (soaked in rice water, peel removed, each above one qian five fen) Cimicifugae Rhizoma (one qian)
Ginseng Radix (remove rhizome) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Curculinis Fructus (stir-fried) Alismatis Rhizoma (each above five fen) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (honey-fried) Phellodendri Cortex (wine-soaked) Angelicae Sinensis Radix
Ophiopogonis Radix (remove heart) Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (remove white pith) Puerariae Radix (each above three fen) Schisandrae Fructus (nine pieces)
The *Neijing* states: "Yang qi guards the exterior and maintains consolidation," and "Heat causes qi to leak." Currently, summer-heat pathogen invades the Wei (Defensive) level, thus causing fever and spontaneous sweating. Astragalus Radix, Ginseng Radix, and Glycyrrhizae Radix tonify Middle Jiao Qi as Sovereign drugs; Glycyrrhizae Radix, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix are sweet, pungent, and slightly warm, nourishing Stomach Qi and harmonizing Blood vessels as Minister drugs. Atractylodis Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, and Alismatis Rhizoma promote urination and drain dampness.
Cimicifugae Rhizoma and Puerariae Radix are bitter, sweet, and neutral, excellently resolving muscle-layer heat, and utilizing wind to overcome dampness. When dampness prevails, food fails to digest leading to fullness and stagnation, therefore stir-fried Curculinis Fructus (sweet and pungent) and Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (pungent and warm) are used to digest food and move Qi.
The Kidney dislikes dryness; urgently consuming pungent substances moistens it. Therefore, Phellodendri Cortex (bitter, pungent, cold) is used, borrowing the sweet flavor to clear heat and replenish fluid deficiency, nourishing its source of transformation. Schisandrae Fructus and Ophiopogonis Radix (sour, sweet, slightly cold) serve as Assistant drugs to rescue Lung Metal (Geng Metal) injured by summer heat.
Crush the above herbs into coarse powder. Take one dose, add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove dregs, and take slightly warm after a considerable time post-meal.
This disease arises from irregular diet and overexertion damaging the Spleen and Stomach over time, manifesting during the summer season.
If sweating is profuse, it indicates loss of Body Fluids; stop it urgently. Add Schisandrae Fructus (ten pieces), stir-fried Phellodendri Cortex (five fen), and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (three fen). This is the method of astringing to collect.
If damp-heat attacks the Liver and Kidney, causing unsteady gait, flaccidity and weakness of legs and knees, and deviation of both feet, indicating invasion by Flaccidity syndrome pathogen, add wine-washed Phellodendri Cortex and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (each five fen) to restore strength to the feet.
If stool is constipated and difficult to pass for one or two days, leading to reduced appetite, this is due to latent fire in the Blood preventing lubrication. Add Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Rehmanniae Radix (each five fen), Persicae Semen paste, and Cannabis Fructus paste (each one qian) to moisten.
In individuals with Spleen and Stomach deficiency, encountering continuous rain in July and August, where all things become moist, sweat soaks clothes, body feels heavy and short of breath, combined with abundant dampness assisting heat to become pathogenic, the cold and clear Qi of the northwest regions ceases. Upon re-exposure to this pathogen, bones lack strength, the form seems like being in a dream, hazy as if in smoke, unaware of one's own existence. The Sages established laws: in summer, supplementation should tonify innate Yuan Qi, not supplement fire-heat; eating cold foods in summer exemplifies this. Thus, Ginseng Radix's sweetness tonifies Qi, Ophiopogonis Radix's bitterness and cold clear heat and replenish fluid sources, and Schisandrae Fructus's sourness clears and descends Dryness Metal, named Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder). Sun Simiao stated: "Take Schisandrae Fructus regularly in May to tonify the Qi of the Five Zang organs," which shares this intent.
