Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Poria (Baifuling), Licorice Root (Gancao), Tangerine Peel (Juhong), decocted with ginger water.
In this formula, Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia) [Pinelliae Rhizoma] resolves phlegm and dries dampness; Tangerine Peel (Juhong) [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium] eliminates phlegm and regulates qi; Poria (Baifuling) [Poria] descends qi and leaches out dampness; Licorice Root (Gancao) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] tonifies the Spleen and harmonizes the Middle Jiao. Tonifying the Spleen prevents the generation of dampness; drying and leaching dampness prevents the generation of phlegm; regulating and descending qi causes phlegm to dissipate. This is the sacred medicine for treating phlegm. If one dislikes the dry nature of Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia) and substitutes it with other herbs, the purport of the formula is lost. For hot-phlegm, add Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) [Scutellariae Radix] and Coptis Rhizome (Lian) [Coptidis Rhizoma]; for cold-phlegm, add Dried Ginger (Jiang) [Zingiberis Rhizoma] and Cinnamon Twig (Gui) [Cinnamomi Ramulus]; for damp-phlegm, add Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma] and Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu) [Atractylodis Rhizoma]; for food-stagnation phlegm, add Medicated Leaven (Qu) [Massa Medicata Fermentata] and Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha) [Crataegi Fructus]; for wind-phlegm, add Arisaema Rhizome (Nanxing) [Arisaemae Tuber]; for dry-phlegm, add Trichosanthes Fruit (Gualou) [Trichosanthis Fructus] and Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai) [Indigo Naturalis]; for stagnation and blood stasis, add Aurantium Fructus (Zhike) [Aurantii Fructus] and Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu) [Cyperi Rhizoma]; for old-phlegm, add Haishizhong [Fossilia Ossis Massachuetensis] and Mirabilite (Puxiao) [Natri Sulfas], the subtlety of appropriate combination is fully realized here.

Wind-heat syndrome has two types of symptoms: one type involves pre-existing phlegm-fire and stagnant heat inside, where extreme heat generates wind, or it is constrained by wind-cold and cannot be dispersed; this is heat as the root and cold as the branch, treatment should employ a mild acrid-cool agent to clear heat and disperse wind. If heat is severe generating wind, only treat the heat and the wind will naturally subside; if wind has not yet generated heat, only treat the wind and the heat will naturally heal.

Guiding and dispersing wind-heat.
Platycodon Root (Jiegeng) [Platycodi Radix], Akebia Caulis (Mutong) [Akebiae Caulis], Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha) [Crataegi Fructus], Aurantium Fructus (Zhike) [Aurantii Fructus], Peucedani Radix (Qianhu) [Peucedani Radix], Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium], Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong) [Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma], Licorice Root (Gancao) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma], decocted with ginger water. If the Qi pattern resembles that of eruptive sores/rashes, add Cicada Slough (Chantui) [Cicadae Periostracum]; if internal heat, add Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) [Scutellariae Radix]; if cough, add Mulberry Bark (Sangpi) [Mori Cortex] and Apricot Seed (Xingren) [Armeniacae Semen].

Wind injury (Shangfeng) is although a minor disease. However, the proverb says "if not awakened, it becomes consumption" (long-standing cough turning into pulmonary tuberculosis), due to insufficiency of Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney) organs, and Yang Qi failing to defend on the exterior. The Classic states: "Those injured by wind, the head receives it first," thus headache is inevitable. The Classic states: "When Yang floats, heat spontaneously arises; when Yin is weak, sweat spontaneously issues," thus fever and spontaneous sweating are inevitable. If flesh and pores are closed and resistant, even great wind and harsh toxins cannot harm. The Classic states: "If flesh is not firm and pores are loose, one easily suffers from wind diseases." It also says: "Deficient evils and thieving winds, Yang receives them first; for wind is Heaven's Yang, wind injures Wei (Defensive) Qi, and Wei Qi is Man's Yang, they follow their kind." Treatment methods must not disperse too excessively, nor tonify too early; one must further examine whether the cause is internal or external to treat accordingly. External causes imply excess; in Autumn and Winter use Acrid-Warm agents, in Spring and Summer use Acrid-Cool agents, to resolve the muscle layer and scatter via sweat. Internal causes imply deficiency; consolidate Wei Qi and simultaneously resolve wind pathogens. If one again uses exterior-releasing methods, it will doubly weaken the deficiency. One must know that where pathogenic factors gather, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) is necessarily deficient; if one merely engages in dispersing and resolving, the already received pathogen departs, but when will future pathogens cease? If after exterior release, aversion to wind and spontaneous sweating remain unchanged, this indicates Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) injury with insufficient Qi and Blood. Focus primarily on nourishing Ying and supporting Wei. If residual pathogens remain and one adds exterior-dispersing methods, the disaster of "weakening the deficient" is incalculable. If one habitually has phlegm-heat obstructing the Taiyin and Yangming meridians, forming internal nests, then wind pathogens easily bind externally. If attracted thereby, as described where wind rides fire's momentum and fire displays wind's might, mutually fanning each other, one must externally add Acrid-Cool agents to resolve the binding, and internally add heat-clearing and phlegm-resolving agents to remove the nests, thus cutting off the harm of interior-exterior mutual entanglement. Do not regard it as a minor illness like an autumn hair; if recurring frequently and gradually worsening, often people neglect it, ignore taboos, misuse attacking and tonifying methods, leading from superficial to deep, invading Zang-Fu organs, daily declining Qi and Blood, drying up Metal and exhausting Water, all diseases becoming entrenched, transforming into consumption (Laozai), which is incurable.
Wind injury refers to what books call new-onset cough with nasal congestion and heavy voice. Generally, sweating, aversion to wind, and floating-rapid pulse indicate wind injury. Externally presenting Six Channels manifestations, such as headache, neck stiffness, and back/spine rigidity, should be treated with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) or Jiwei Qianghuo Tang (Eight-Armed Notopterygium Decoction). However, severity varies depending on the person's interior Qi deficiency or excess, and colds vary in depth. Initially there is cold, so medicines should be Acrid-Warm and dispersing; if stagnant for long, there is heat, so medicines should be Acrid-Cool and harmonizing. One must absolutely not use Cold-Cool agents initially, causing exterior pathogens not to disperse and stagnant fire not to vent, thereby further injuring Lung Qi, which is like inviting thieves to destroy the home. For those with dual Spleen-Lung deficiency, loose interior defenses, and frequent wind injuries, the more it erupts the more deficient it becomes, the more deficient it is the more susceptible it becomes; only Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) is most suitable.
