Treats external contraction and internal injury, presenting with fever, headache, vomiting and regurgitation, cough, phlegm obstructing the middle jiao (middle burner), dizziness, and diarrhea.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf) Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix) Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber) [stir-fried with ginger juice] Fu Ling (Poria) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) [stir-fried with bran] Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus). If external contraction symptoms are predominant, remove Da Zao and add Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus); if there is fire in the lungs, remove Ren Shen and add Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) and Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex); for diarrhea, add Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen); for severe cough, remove Mu Xiang and Ren Shen.
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. For wind-cold, it is appropriate to release the exterior, hence Zi Su, Gan Ge, and Qian Hu are used; for labor-induced injury, it is appropriate to tonify the middle, hence Ren Shen and Fu Ling are used; Gan Cao, Chen Pi, and Ban Xia eliminate phlegm and stop cough; Zhi Ke and Jie Geng benefit the diaphragm and widen the intestines; Mu Xiang promotes qi circulation and breaks stagnation, harmonizing both interior and exterior, so that pathogenic factors dissipate.

Wind-heat presents with cough, sore throat, and facial heat; this is also known as heat-induced wind-strike. Generally, those who have latent phlegm-fire and郁热 (depressed heat) inside, where extreme heat generates wind, or whose heat is constrained by wind-cold and cannot vent, have heat as the root and cold as the branch. Treatment should focus on clearing heat and dispersing wind. The Classic states: "For fire depression, use dispersion." In cases of external constraint by wind-cold, sweating can be induced. However, for those with inherent yin deficiency, exacerbated by excessive warmth leading to sore throat, hoarseness, and cough, one should assist辛凉 (acrid-cool) herbs with yin-nourishing and lung-moistening agents. Acrid-cool herbs resolve pathogens from the exterior, while sweet-bitter agents harmonize righteousness within. One must not abruptly use bitter-cold herbs, lest they cause depressed heat to remain inside, preventing righteousness from extending and pathogens from resolving, thereby further damaging the clear qi of the Lung Metal.
Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction)
See the previous section on Wind-Strike. Add Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), and Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix). If cough persists, add Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen); if night cough increases, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma); if sore throat occurs, reduce the dosage of Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber); if phlegm is abundant, add Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus); if lung meridian heat is congested, for mild cases add Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) and Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), and for severe cases add Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
