Fulonggan (Cookstove Earth):
Formed by the Qi of Fire and Earth, it tastes sweet, pungent, and slightly salty. Its nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. Ancient formulas treat conditions such as mania, sleep terrors, stroke, and evil qi invasion because it is believed that the stove contains divine spirits capable of dispelling dark yin pathogens. It primarily treats metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) and hematemesis (vomiting blood) because excessive blood loss inevitably damages Middle Qi; the sweet flavor tonifies the Middle, and the warm nature harmonizes the blood vessels. It resolves carbuncles, swellings, and toxic vapors due to the dispersing action of the pungent flavor and the softening action of the salty flavor. It induces labor and expels the placenta, and treats night crying in infants, taking advantage of its nature as earth with spiritual properties that easily dispel yin-stagnant pathogens, while its heavy nature provides a downward-purging and calming effect.
Dangmo (Pot Ink) is Baicaoshuang (Hundred-Grass Frost), which is the soot from the middle of the pot. Soot from burned weeds is named Baicaoshuang. Its sweet nature is even more efficacious, though *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not record its flavor or nature. Observing its primary indications, it is similar to Fulonggan. Generally, blood stops upon encountering black substances, and insect toxins or evil qi disperse when encountering pungent and warm substances. Therefore, *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats insect toxins, sudden evil qi attack, hematemesis, and blood syncope. It is ground finely with wine, water, or vinegar and taken warm. It can also be applied externally to metal wounds (Jinchuang) to generate flesh and stop bleeding.
Fulonggan refers to the yellow earth at the center of the stove bottom facing the pot. The best quality is aged for ten years or more and has a brown color. It can be mixed with vinegar or mashed garlic for external application to resolve stagnant carbuncles, swellings, and toxic vapors. Mixed with water for frequent dressing changes, it can ward off seasonal epidemics, calm the fetus, treat aphasia due to wind-stroke, restlessness, metrorrhagia, hematemesis, cough with reverse flow, dampness removal, and swelling reduction. For hematuria, spermatorrhea, intestinal wind (blood in stool), regurgitation, epistaxis, leukorrhea, inducing labor, expelling the placenta, and infant night crying, it should be ground into an extremely fine powder and taken mixed with water.
Baicaoshuang is a crucial agent for treating blood disorders because black overcomes red (blood). It treats insect toxins, sudden evil qi attack, blood syncope, hematemesis, bloody dysentery, and red stools. Externally applied to metal wounds, it generates flesh and stops bleeding. However, it should not be applied to facial sores, as it leaves a mark like a seal if it enters the skin.
Main Indications (Integration with Smallpox/Rashes): Resolves smallpox carbuncles and swellings, and simultaneously stops vomiting and diarrhea. Baicaoshuang is used in pills and powders specifically when bloody dysentery occurs during smallpox/rash eruptions.
Qingmengshi (Green Migong Stone):
It possesses the fierce nature inherent in stones. It tastes pungent and salty, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It is heavy and descending. The pungent flavor disperses nodules, the salty flavor softens hardness, and the heavy weight promotes downward expulsion. Thus, all symptoms treated according to *Shennong Bencao Jing* are consistent with these properties.
Qingmengshi treats chronic food stagnation in women causing stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, heat accumulation in children, stubborn phlegm causing epilepsy and fright, wheezing requiring phlegm expulsion, and food digestion. Therefore, it is included in Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) as a divine agent for soothing the Liver, breaking stagnation, and treating fright-heat and phlegm obstruction. When phlegm encounters Qingmengshi, it transforms into water. However, it is contraindicated for those with Spleen deficiency and weak Qi.
