Using Daichengqi Decoction (Great Order the Qi Decoction), Xiao Chengqi Decoction (Minor Order the Qi Decoction), Tiaowei Chengqi Decoction (Regulate the Stomach Order the Qi Decoction), Dachaihu Decoction (Major Bupleurum Decoction), Sanyi Chengqi Decoction, and Daxiexiong Decoction (Major Chest-Trap Decoction) as substitutes are truly miraculous medicines.
It treats conditions where pathogenic heat from Cold Damage (Shanghan) has transmitted to the interior, resulting in hard and dry stools, dry mouth and throat, aversion to heat, delirium, restlessness such as pulling off clothes and acting wildly, flailing hands and feet, appearance of macules and jaundice, Yang collapse (Yang Jue), tidal fever with spontaneous sweating, fullness and hardness in the chest and abdomen, and pain around the umbilicus.
Ingredients: Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄), Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实), Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Nongpu, 浓朴/厚朴), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 甘草), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin, 黄芩), Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu, 柴胡), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药). First, boil two zhong (a traditional unit of volume) of water for three rolling boils, then add the herbs. Decoct until eight-tenths remains. Before administration, mix in three spoons of rusted iron water. It takes effect immediately. This utilizes the heavy nature of iron, which is most effective in descending heat and resolving stagnation like a miracle. This is an unshared secret.
It treats conditions where pathogenic heat transmits to the interior and accumulates in the Bladder. The patient appears manic, urination is free and clear, stool is black, the lower abdomen is full and painful, the body and eyes are yellowish, accompanied by delirium and dry thirst. This is Blood Accumulation Syndrome (Xuxue Zheng). The pulse is deep and forceful. It is suitable to use this decoction to purge until black material is expelled, at which point the patient will recover. If blood discharges spontaneously before taking the medicine, it indicates recovery is imminent, and the medicine should not be taken.
Ingredients: Semen Persicae (Taoren, 桃仁), Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi, 桂枝), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride (Qingpi, 青皮), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, 当归), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 甘草), Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实). Decoct with ginger water. After preparation, add three spoons of juice extracted from Sappan Wood (Sumu, 苏木) and take orally.
It treats Blood Accumulation in the Middle Jiao, characterized by urgent binding in the abdomen and dysentery with pus and blood.
Ingredients: Semen Persicae (50 seeds, skin and tips removed), Cinnamon Bark (Guixin, 桂心), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (2 liang each), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (4 liang). Use two bowls of water, decoct to one bowl. Remove dregs, add Mangxiao, and take when warm.
The urgent binding in the abdomen is relieved by the sweet and緩 (gentle/moderating) nature of Taoren; Blood Accumulation in the Middle Jiao is dispersed by the acrid and dispersing nature of Guixin. Essentially, sweetness moderates, and acridity disperses. When heat is severe causing blood coagulation, leading either to dry constipation or dysentery with pus and blood, only Mangxiao and Dahuang are sufficient to break through the barriers. Gancao is added to allow for a thorough and gradual search and elimination of pathogens, rather than a single aggressive purge that clears everything at once. Note: Xijiao Dihuang Decoction (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) treats blood disorders in the Upper Jiao; Didang Decoction treats blood disorders in the Lower Jiao; this formula treats blood disorders in the Middle Jiao. "Zhuansheng" states: Guixin should be used. The old version using Guizhi is incorrect. Yu Jiayan stated: Taoren is used to promote blood flow; the added Guizhi is to resolve external pathogens. Generally, if caused by external pathogens, Guizhi is used; if specifically treating Blood Accumulation, Guixin is appropriate.
