The Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth, and Earth is the mother of all things. Li Dongyuan said: "When the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, hundreds of diseases arise." Regulating the Middle Jiao is the primary task. The Spleen delights in sweetness, hence Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root Preparatum), and Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) are used; it dislikes dryness, hence Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Fu Ling (Poria) are used; the Spleen delights in fragrance, hence Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) is used; Fire generates Earth (Heart is the mother of Spleen), hence Lian Rou (Nelumbinis Plumula) is used to benefit the Heart; Earth controls Water (Kidney belongs to Water), hence Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) is used to treat the Kidney; Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) enters the Lung meridian, capable of ascending and descending, thereby connecting with Heaven Qi, preventing stagnation in the Di Dao (Spleen/Stomach).
Treats Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, indigestion, cold limbs, severe chest and abdominal pain, phlegm-qi obstruction, mouth and tongue sores, vomiting, or diarrhea. Removing Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) makes it Ren Shen Lizhong Tang (Ginseng Decoction for Regulating the Middle). Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, rhizome removed, one liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Stir-fried with Soil, two liang), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum, one liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root Preparatum, two liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, thoroughly processed, one piece). Each dose is eight qian, decocted in water and taken orally.
Humans possess Yuan Yang, called True Fire. If this fire declines, it cannot generate Earth (Spleen), causing the root of nourishment to be severely deficient. Now, using Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) to restore the Minor Fire (Mingmen Fire), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) to warm the Middle Jiao, while Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root Preparatum) tonify Qi. When Qi is abundant, Fire is sufficient, and the Spleen and Earth can naturally function vigorously. The Classic states: "Qi primarily provides warmth." It also states: "Where Cold dominates, use Pungent-Hot substances to level it." This refers to tonifying Fire. Heart is above, Kidney below, Liver left, Lung right, but Spleen alone resides in the center. If Central Qi is empty, the Four Zang organs cannot generate each other. With this formula to regulate it, the Mother of All Things (Spleen) is stabilized, and the Four Zang organs receive nourishment. Hence it is called Lizhong Tang (Decoction for Regulating the Middle). Removing Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) makes it Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction), designed for patients with cold extremities.
