The *Treatise on Acupuncture Taboos* states: The five zang organs have critical points that must be carefully examined. The liver qi arises on the left (the liver corresponds to Wood, flourishing in Spring; as Spring Yang generates and rises, it is said to arise on the left). The lung qi stores on the right (the lung corresponds to Metal, flourishing in Autumn; as Autumn Yin collects and kills, it is said to store on the right. The Liver belongs to Shaoyang [Lesser Yang], the beginning of Yang growth, hence termed "arising"; the Lung belongs to Shao Yin [Lesser Yin], the initial stage of Yin Zang, hence termed "storing"). The heart distributes on the exterior (Yang Qi governs the exterior, and the Heart corresponds to Fire). The kidney regulates within the interior (Yin Qi governs the interior, and the Kidney corresponds to Water. The Heart is the master of the Five Zang Organs, hence termed "distributing"; the moving Qi between the kidneys regulates the Five Zang Organs internally, hence termed "regulating"). The spleen is called the envoy (Ying [Nutrient] Qi moves ceaselessly, transporting grain residues, thus acting like an envoy). The stomach is called the market (where grains and fluids gather, and all flavors enter like a marketplace, hence termed "market"). Above the diaphragm and huang [blind area], there are parents (Above the diaphragm and huang, the Qi Sea is centered. Qi is the source of life, and life is the master of destiny; thus, the Qi Sea is regarded as the parents of humans). It is also said: Below the heart and above the diaphragm is the huang. The Heart is Yang, symbolizing the father; the Lung is Yin, symbolizing the mother. The Lung governs Qi, the Heart governs Blood; they protect and nourish the body, hence called parents. Beside the seventh vertebral segment, there is the "small heart" (The "small heart" is the palace where the true spirit resides. The spine has three sets of seven, totaling twenty-one segments. The Kidney is located inferiorly. Beside the seventh segment, the spirit of the Kidney is called "Zhi" [Will]. The spiritual essence of the Five Zang Organs is all named Shen [Spirit]. The reason Shen is named Zhi is because it is the spirit of the Heart). Following this brings fortune; opposing it brings blame (Human existence and physical formation depend on this. Following it extends fortune; opposing it brings calamity. This describes the fixed order for acupuncture of the zang organs). Do not needle someone who is heavily intoxicated, as it causes Qi chaos. Do not needle someone who is extremely angry, as it causes Qi rebellion. Do not needle someone who is severely fatigued (Jing [Channel] Qi escapes outward). Do not needle someone who has just eaten a full meal (Qi is abundant and full). Do not needle someone who is severely hungry (Qi is insufficient). Do not needle someone who is severely thirsty (Blood vessels are dry). Do not needle someone who has been greatly startled (Shen [Spirit] is agitated and scattered). These examples list individuals who should not be lightly needled, representing the general principles of acupuncture.
