The *Classic* states: "When a male reaches eight years old, his Kidney Qi becomes substantial, his teeth change, and his hair grows." This is due to the interaction of Yin and Yang. When Yin Qi cannot overcome Yang Qi, a male is formed; Yin essence accumulates internally, containing Yin within Yang. The number of Old Yin reaches its limit at ten, while the number of Young Yin follows at eight. Males possess the Qi of Young Yang, whose number should be seven, but here it is eight because Yin accumulates in the center, thus combining with the number of Young Yin. Young Yin refers to the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney governs bones. Upon reaching the number eight, the number of Young Yin becomes correct and Kidney Qi activates; therefore, males are born with deciduous teeth at eight months and undergo tooth replacement at eight years. This illustrates that the harmony of Yin and Yang Qi enables the formation of the physical body. It further states: "When a female reaches seven years old, her Kidney Qi flourishes, her teeth change, and her hair grows." This is also due to the union of Yin and Yang. When Yang Qi cannot overcome Yin Qi, a female is formed; Yang essence accumulates internally, containing Yang within Yin. The number of Old Yang reaches its limit at nine, while the number of Young Yang follows at seven. Females belong to the Qi of Young Yin and are associated with the number eight. The current pairing with the number seven of Young Yang is because Yang accumulates internally; only when the number of Young Yang is reached does the internally accumulated Qi begin to move and Kidney Qi flourish. Therefore, females are born with deciduous teeth at seven months and undergo tooth replacement at seven years.
If there is delayed dentition (Chi Chi), it is due to insufficient congenital Kidney Qi, resulting in weak marrow. Teeth are the surplus of bones, and bones are the surplus of the Kidneys. Marrow is formed by the connection of bones. If marrow is insufficient, it cannot nourish the teeth from above, leading to delayed eruption. If one can regulate Blood and Qi, consolidate the root, and restore vitality, the teeth will naturally grow, and bone strength will become firm.
Furthermore, after two or three years of age, improper alternating of milk and solid food, or paternal sexual activity while intoxicated during breastfeeding, may cause the infant to develop Shen Gan (Kidney deficiency-related malnutrition syndrome). Crying results in blood filling the mouth, named Xuanlu. Or teeth turn black and fragment, named Bengsha. Over time, the condition becomes foul, and all gum roots fall out, named Fugen. There are also cases where Wind-Heat pathogens struggle against each other, combined with anger and fatigue, causing tooth pain and swelling. This is because the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian connect to the teeth; thus, the gum roots swell and protrude, named Quchi (Cavities). Those who have a preference for sweet and fatty foods may develop worms in the teeth, named Chongchi. If caused by falls or blows, or damage from acute Gan syndromes, the teeth will not regrow after long-term loss.
