Treats the condition where heat is accumulated in the Spleen Meridian, causing the Lianquan acupoint (Ren-23, located under the tongue) to fail in controlling fluids, resulting in drooling.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 4 fen) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried with wine, 4 fen) Fu Ling (Poria, 8 fen) Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, steamed over a rice cooker until cooked, stir-fried until yellow, 6 fen) Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, stir-fried until yellow, 1 qian) Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis, 5 fen) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 1 qian) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 4 fen, mixed with a small amount of ginger juice), add seven lotus seeds (removed from hearts), and seven stalks of Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla). Decoct in water and take long after meals.
When diagnosing diseases in infants, one must examine the periods of Bian Zheng (developmental changes and fevers). If medications are mistakenly administered during this time, the vital energy for growth will be entirely depleted. Every 32 days constitutes one "Bian" (change), and every 64 days constitutes one "Zheng" (steaming). The concept of one Bian every 32 days corresponds to the 32 teeth in the human body. In cases where there are only 28 teeth, it is because the number of days for Bian is insufficient. Humans have 365 bones; excluding the 45 small bones in the hands and feet, there remain 320. From the first day of birth, each ten days governs ten segments, so ten days equal one hundred segments. Thirty-two days thus equal three hundred twenty segments, forming one Bian. The residual Qi of the bones enters the gums from the brain to form teeth. At 32 days after birth, the first Bian occurs, generating the Kidney Zang Qi associated with Gui (Water), belonging to the Foot Shaoyin Meridian. It manifests as fever with cold ears and coccyx, and white blisters on the lips. At 64 days, there are two Bian and one Zheng, generating the Bladder Fu Qi associated with Ren (Water), belonging to the Foot Taiyang Meridian. It manifests as alternating chills and fever about to occur, frequent sneezing, irritability during nursing, and slight swelling of the upper lip. Since Kidney and Bladder belong to Water, and the number of Water is one, this arises first from Bian. At 96 days, there are three Bian, generating the Heart Zang Qi associated with Ding (Fire), belonging to the Hand Shaoyin Meridian. It manifests as body heat with sweating, fearfulness, and empty fright. At 128 days, there are four Bian and two Zheng, generating the Small Intestine Fu Qi associated with Bing (Fire), belonging to the Hand Taiyang Meridian. It manifests as high fever throughout the body. Since Heart and Small Intestine belong to Fire, and the number of Fire is two, this is formed by two Zheng. At 160 days, there are five Bian, generating the Liver Zang Qi associated with Yi (Wood), belonging to the Foot Jueyin Meridian. It manifests as the completion of palm bone formation and learning to crawl. At 192 days, there are six Bian and three Zheng, generating the Gallbladder Fu Qi associated with Jia (Wood), belonging to the Foot Shaoyang Meridian. It manifests as mental confusion and fatigue, eyes closed and unable to open. Since Liver and Gallbladder belong to Wood, and the number of Wood is three, this is formed by three Zheng. At 224 days, there are seven Bian, generating the Lung Zang Qi associated with Xin (Metal), belonging to the Hand Taiyang Meridian (Note: Text says Hand Taiyang, but Lung is typically Hand Taiyin; translating literally as per source). It manifests as anxious thoughts, fear, and excessive crying. At 256 days, there are eight Bian and four Zheng, generating the Large Intestine Fu Qi associated with Geng (Metal), belonging to the Hand Yangming Meridian. It manifests in mild diarrhea with intestinal rumbling and steaming fever. Since Lung and Large Intestine belong to Metal, and the number of Metal is four, this is formed by four Zheng. At 288 days, there are nine Bian, generating the Spleen Zang Qi associated with Ji (Earth), belonging to the Foot Taiyin Meridian. It manifests as body heat, vomiting, and diarrhea. At 320 days, there are ten Bian and five Zheng, generating the Stomach Fu Qi associated with Wu (Earth), belonging to the Foot Yangming Meridian. It manifests as anorexia, abdominal pain, vomiting milk with slight sweating. Since Earth's number is five, this is formed by five Zheng. The Pericardium is a Zang organ belonging to the Hand Jueyin Meridian, and the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) is a Fu organ belonging to the Hand Shaoyang Meridian. Both lack distinct shape, so they do not undergo Bian or Zheng. Once ten Bian and five Zheng are completed, totaling 320 days, there follow three major Zheng. Calculating based on one Zheng every 64 days, this adds another 192 days, totaling 512 days with the previous Bian Zheng counts. After adding one more Zheng, reaching the period of 576 days, the Bian Zheng stabilizes, the child becomes adult-like, and the Cun pulse begins to appear. "Bian" refers to the transformation that generates the Five Zang organs and alters their temperament. "Zheng" refers to the steaming that nourishes the Six Fu organs and lengthens the bone joints. Within the first one to seven days of a Bian, there must be white pearl-like blisters on the center of the upper lip, resembling fish eyes, with slightly squinting eyes. Mild cases present with body heat, sweating, and slight fright, with cold ears and coccyx. Severe cases present with high fever, with or without sweating, chaotic pulse, anorexia, and vomiting/regurgitation. If the body, ears, and coccyx are all hot, it indicates a concurrent invasion of other pathogens. Those affected by concurrent Zheng will have slightly swollen upper lips resembling silkworms, severe body heat, heat in the head and forehead, intermittent heat and cold, dry lips/mouth/nose, choking gas, vomiting, chaotic pulse with or without sweating, anorexia, frequent fright and crying while nursing. From the onset to the thirteenth day, when Bian Zheng is complete, there is no suffering. The three major Zheng involve dry lips and mouth, coughing, wheezing, restlessness, choking gas, abdominal pain, pain in the body and joints, upward gaze, and frequent fright palpitations. However, if illness occurs within seven days, merely blowing air onto the fontanelle is sufficient; do not lightly administer medicine. If there is no fright or heat, and no other discomfort, it indicates robust prenatal constitution and hidden Bian Zheng. The previous discussion on Bian Zheng is based on the theory that Heaven generates Water with One, Earth generates Fire with Two, Heaven generates Wood with Three, Earth generates Metal with Four, and Heaven generates Earth with Five, representing growth from inside out and bottom up. Another view takes Jia and Yi Wood of the East as the beginning: First Bian Liver, Second Bian Gallbladder, Third Bian Heart, Fourth receives Small Intestine, Fifth receives Spleen, Sixth Bian Stomach, Seventh Bian Lung, Eighth Bian Large Intestine, Ninth Bian Kidney, Tenth Bian Bladder. This is based on the principle of mother-son generation, where generation ensures succession. Another view, citing *Su Wen* stating Spring corresponds to Wood and thus starts with the Liver: First Bian Liver, Second Bian Lung, Third Bian Heart, Fourth Bian Spleen, Fifth Bian Kidney. This is based on the husband-wife mutual overcoming principle, where overcoming ensures regulation. Generally, in Yin-Yang creation, the mutual generation of the Five Elements and Five Zang organs is smooth/forward, while mutual overcoming is reverse. Moreover, Bian Zheng is about nurturing Qi and Blood and enriching the Five Zang organs, which aligns with the principle of mutual generation. This logic is clear.
*Ling Shu* states: At ten years old, the Five Zang organs begin to stabilize, blood and Qi are already flowing, and the Qi is lower, so the child likes to run. At twenty years old, blood and Qi begin to flourish, muscles are growing, so the youth likes to walk briskly. At thirty years old, the Five Zang organs are largely stabilized, muscles are firm, and blood vessels are full, so the adult likes to walk steadily. At forty years old, the Five Zang organs, Six Fu organs, and Twelve Meridians are all flourishing and stable, pores begin to loosen, luster declines, hair turns gray, and vitality is stable without agitation, so the person likes to sit. At fifty years old, Liver Qi begins to decline, liver leaves thin, bile decreases, and vision becomes unclear. At sixty years old, Heart Qi begins to decline, prone to sorrow and grief, blood and Qi become sluggish, so the person likes to lie down. At seventy years old, Spleen Qi is deficient, skin becomes dry. At eighty years old, Lung Qi declines, Po (corporeal soul) departs, so speech is often erroneous. At ninety years old, Kidney Qi is exhausted, and the meridians of the Four Zang organs are empty. At one hundred years old, all Five Zang organs are deficient, Shen (spirit) and Qi depart, leaving only the physical form to conclude life.
