Shengong San (Divine Merit Powder) treats severe epidemic toxins and conditions such as Da Tou Wen (Big Head Plague).
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-fried, each 5 qian), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shuniuzi (Arctii Fructus), Banlangen (Isatidis Radix), Mapibo (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Raw), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, fried, each 2 qian), Xin Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.7 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian). Grind into fine powder, take with decoction. Alternatively, make into honey pills for sucking. Some formulas add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma). If stool is hard, add Jiuwei Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, wine-roasted) to promote bowel movement; if swelling and heat are severe, use Bianfa (stone needle therapy) to prick and bleed.
One formula contains Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 1 qian) and no Renshen.
Another formula
Treats Da Tou Tianxing Bing (Big Head Epidemic Disease). This is because dampness is located at the high peak of the head; do not use descending herbs.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried), Jiu Zheng Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, wine-steamed). Decoct in water and take.
Another formula
Treats Da Tou Yi (Big Head Plague) with miraculous effect.
Guanzhong (Cyathulae Officinalis Rhizoma or Cibotii Rhizoma, 3 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 3 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 1 qian). Add Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum), decoct in water and take.
Ren Zhonghuang (Human Manure Yellow), which resolves epidemic toxins excellently, is manufactured using Gancao. The method is seen under Bencao (Materia Medica).
The *Ling Shu* states: The face is connected to the body shape. When heaven is cold, the earth cracks and ice forms; sometimes hands and feet become flaccid and drooping, yet why does the face not require clothing?
It is said: The twelve meridians and three hundred and sixty-five collaterals, their blood and qi all ascend to the face and flow into the orifices. Their refined yang qi ascends to the eyes to form vision. Its branch qi flows to the ears to form hearing. The Zong Qi (Gathering Qi) emerges from the nose to form smell. The turbid qi comes from the stomach, flows through the lips and tongue to form taste. The fluids of these qi all steam upwards onto the face, and since the skin is thick and the flesh firm, even extreme heat or cold cannot overcome it.
Li Dongyuan says: Irregular diet leads to Stomach disease; Stomach disease leads to shortness of breath, reduced spirit, and generation of great heat. Sometimes fire qi flares up, attacking only the face. Because the Yangming Meridian has abundant qi and blood, and is accompanied by wind-heat ascending, and all Yang meridians converge on the head and face, this causes the face to feel hot like drunkenness. Treatment should first disperse wind-heat, or use Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (Regulate the Stomach Order the Downward Flow Decoction) added with Huanglian and Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), to purge two or three times, thoroughly eliminating the root heat and dispersing wind-heat. Then use Shengma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction) added with Huanglian as the main prescription.
The six Yang meridities of the hands and feet all ascend to the head, but only the Yangming Stomach Meridian crosses at the nose to the forehead, enters the upper teeth, surrounds the lips along the cheeks, ascends before the ear, passes through Kerenren (Shangguan, GB 4), thus the human face belongs to the Yangming Meridian. If there is heat in the Stomach, or stagnant fire, the face becomes hot; use Shengma Tang added with Huanglian. If there is cold in the Stomach, the face feels cold; first use Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate the Middle Decoction) to warm the middle qi, then use Shengma Tang added with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) as the main prescription. If wind-heat is severe internally and attacks upward, causing facial and eye swelling, or purple coloration of the face and nose, or wind-thorns and urticaria, treat according to symptoms.
Yellowish or pale face with a cold nose indicates extreme deficiency of Yang qi; use large doses of Renshen and Fuzi as the main prescription. Facial pain is due to fire, as all Yang meridities converge on the face, and fire is Yang. The brilliance of the Heart manifests on the face, and the Heart governs Minister Fire. However, sudden pain is mostly due to excess fire, while chronic illness is often due to blood deficiency. Because the Stomach governs the front aspect of the face, and the intestines and stomach are like a market gathering food, if heat toxins from diet accumulate in the middle, they manifest externally, causing pain. There are also cases where pain occurs due to overexertion or hunger; this is due to insufficiency of Middle Qi.
