Hair is the surplus of blood; dryness indicates a deficiency of blood. Sudden hair loss accompanied by an itchy scalp, with simultaneous loss of beard and eyebrows, is a manifestation of wind generated by blood heat, resembling the shaking of wind-wood. Hair loss after illness, after sores/ulcers, or after childbirth is caused by the depletion of essence and blood, leading to an inability to nourish. The beard belongs to the Kidney (Zang organ), inheriting Water Qi, thus growing from below. Yin deficiency with Yang hyperactivity results in white but lustrous beard hair. Hair belongs to the Heart (Zang organ), inheriting Fire Qi, thus growing from above. Overexertion of the mind causes Fire to flare upward and deplete blood, resulting in white hair and premature loss. Although their origins differ, there is no method other than tonifying essence and blood to darken the beard and blacken the hair. Thus, *Ling Shu* states: When the Blood and Qi of the Foot-Yangming Meridian are abundant, the beard is beautiful and long; when Blood is scarce and Qi is abundant, the beard is short; when Qi is scarce and Blood is abundant, the beard is sparse; when both Blood and Qi are scarce, there is no beard.

In ancient times, a person entered a latrine, was exposed to foul odors, endured it for a long time, and the next day his entire face turned black, remaining so for over a month. A physiognomist predicted he would die within the month. A skilled physician ordered Chenxiang (Aquilaria Resina) and Tanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum), each 1 liang, to be crushed and burned in a brazier inside a tent. The patient was covered with a quilt, instructed to sit upright with eyes closed, and allowed to exit only after the incense was consumed. The next day, upon looking in a mirror, the blackness on his face gradually dissipated. This is because foul decay belongs to Water, while fragrance belongs to Earth; Earth overcomes Water.
