Treats restlessness and heat due to Heart Qi deficiency, restless sleep at night, and lingering vexation after illness.
Herbs: Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) (remove woody core), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (fried, 1 qian 2 fen each), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini) (each 7 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen). Decoct in water. If vexation is severe, add Zhuyezhu (Bamboo Leaves) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma).
Treats injury to the Spleen due to overthinking, leading to failure to control blood, resulting in forgetfulness, palpitations, fright, insomnia, pain in the Heart and Spleen regions, lethargy with poor appetite, irregular bowel movements, body pain, night sweats, and irregular menstruation in women.
Herbs: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (stir-fried with soil), Fuling (Poria), Longyanrou (Longan Aril) (remove pit), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (fried, each 2 qian), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) (remove bone), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 qian), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (used raw), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (roasted, each 5 fen), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (roasted, 1 qian 5 fen). The Heart houses the Spirit (Shen) and generates Blood; the Spleen houses the Intellect (Yi) and controls Blood. Excessive thinking injures both organs, causing Blood to fail to follow its normal pathways. Deficiency of Heart Blood leads to forgetfulness, palpitations, fright, and insomnia; deficiency of Spleen Blood leads to lethargy, poor appetite, fatigue, limb pain, and inability to control Blood, resulting in spontaneous bleeding. In severe cases, Qi stagnation causes pain in the Heart and Spleen regions. In women, this manifests as leukorrhea and irregular menstruation. Here, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and roasted Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are selected; their sweet and warm nature can tonify Spleen Qi. Longyanrou (Longan Aril), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) are used for their moistening properties to nourish Heart Shen. Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) is added as an assistant because overthinking obstructs Qi in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner); its dispersing and unblocking action regulates Qi and soothes the Spleen, so that Qi becomes harmonious and Blood becomes harmonious. Furthermore, soothing the Liver strengthens the Spleen, allowing Blood scattered externally to return to the Middle Jiao and be controlled by the Taiyin Spleen channel. Therefore, it is named Guipi Tang (Return to the Spleen Decoction).
Regular consumption enhances intelligence.
Herbs: Guijia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mammi) (equal parts). Grind into powder, take one fangcunbi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) with wine, three times daily.
The turtle is the leader of shelled creatures, belonging to extreme Yin, and is extremely spiritual. The dragon is the leader of scaled creatures, belonging to extreme Yang, and is extremely spiritual. Borrowing the Yin and Yang of these two creatures supplements the Yin and Yang of our own bodies; borrowing their spiritual energy assists the spiritual energy of our Heart. Moreover, human Essence (Jing) and Will (Zhi) are stored in the Kidney. Insufficiency of Kidney Essence leads to decline of Will, preventing it from ascending to connect with the Heart. Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) is bitter and clears heat, pungent and disperses stagnation, capable of guiding Kidney Qi to ascend to the Heart. Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) is pungent and disperses Liver Qi, aromatic and soothes the Spleen, capable of opening the orifices of the Heart and benefiting the nine orifices, removing dampness and resolving phlegm. Guijia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) tonifies the Kidney, while Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mammi) anchors the Liver. This dissipates phlegm-fire and calms the Heart and Liver, thereby opening intelligence and strengthening memory.
