The pulse of malaria naturally presents as a string-like (Xian) pulse. If the pulse is floating and string-like, it indicates pathogenic factors in the exterior; if sinking and string-like, it indicates pathogenic factors in the interior; if surging and string-like, it belongs to heat syndrome; if slow and string-like, it belongs to cold syndrome; if slippery and string-like, it is due to food retention. For chronic malaria, if the pulse appears minute (Wei), fine (Xi), empty (Xu), or weak (Ruo), and gradually becomes moderate, recovery will ensue; if the pulse is string-like and tight, the condition is critical; if Earth failure (Spleen-Stomach Qi exhaustion) leads to a double string-like pulse, or if a choppy (Dai) or scattered (San) pulse appears, the condition is incurable.
Xionghuang Guijiu Formula
Treats chronic malaria lasting three days with miraculous effect.
Take one large live turtle, keeping the shell intact. Drill one hole on each shoulder blade, grind nine qian of Ming Xionghuang (Realgar) into fine powder, and insert three qian into each hole. Wrap tightly with Cihuangni (Magnetic Yellow Mud) externally to prevent gas leakage. Roast over charcoal fire until "preserving nature" (retaining medicinal properties), then grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, administered orally with aged rice wine on an empty stomach. Stop after two or three doses.
Xiangyuan Xionghuang San (from *Zhongfutang*)
Take one Chen Xiangyuan (Citron), removing the top skin. For larger fruits, add three qian of transparent Xionghuang (Realgar), grind into fine powder, and stuff inside the citron. Roast in charcoal fire until "preserving nature," then grind into extremely fine powder. Take seven fen per dose. Wrap in soft fermented clothing (traditional food) into six or seven small packets and swallow whole. Do not consume any liquids on that day; allow vomiting of stubborn phlegm.
Banmao Jienie Dan (from *Zhongfutang*)
Ingredients: Banmao (Mylabris), Badou Rou (Seed of Croton tiglium), Zhusha (Cinnabar) (each one qian); Shexiang (Moschus) (two fen); Xionghuang (Realgar) (one qian five fen); Chansu (Toad Venom) (five fen).
Pound three black dates (Ziziphus jujuba) and mix with the ingredients to form pills the size of mung beans. Apply around the glabella (Yintang area) for one hour, then remove and throw into flowing water.

Place in a silk bag and inhale the aroma; malaria will cease. No need to decoct and drink.
Jiaoxiong Qiqi Wan (from *Zhongfutang*)
Ingredients: Hujiao (White Pepper), Xiongjing (Refined Realgar).
