(Wind pathogen can combine with Cold, but Cold does not combine with Wind)
Wind-cold injury occurs because the body's Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is inherently deficient, allowing Wind pathogen to enter due to this deficiency and reside within. Symptoms include nasal congestion, heavy body, and head pain; aversion to wind, fever, and excessive sweating. The pulse is floating, moderate, and forceless; taking Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) should dispel the pathogen.
If cough is present, add Sang Ye (Folium Mori) and Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum); if there is phlegm-heat internally, add Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) and Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis). If sputum is sticky like glue, add Xuan Fu Hua (Flos Inulae); if there is chest fullness and abundant phlegm, add Bei Mu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) and Gua Lou (Fructus Trichosanthis). In winter, if spontaneous sweating occurs, add Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi); if there is no sweat, use Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae).
If caused by food stagnation, Mai Ya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), and Hou Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) are required; if caused by alcohol intoxication, Wu Mei (Fructus Mume) and Bai Dou Kou (Semen Amomi Rotundum) are used to resolve it. For headache, Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) and Qiang Huo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) are indispensable; for asthma/wheezing, Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) and Zi Su Ye (Folium Perillae) must not be omitted.
Wind injuring Wei Qi
Formula: Su Geng (Caulis Perillae), Dou Chi (Semen Sojae Preparatum), Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Chuan Pu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae), Hua Shi (Talcum).
Deficient constitution contracting Wind
Formula: Shen Gui Gui Zhi Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Cinnamon Decoction) plus Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae).
The Taiyang meridian runs from the back to the waist. External Wind-Cold first injures the Yang meridians; when meridian Qi rebels, disease manifests.
Zhong Han (Middle Cold) and Shang Han (Cold Damage) syndromes are not singular; injury leads to gradual deepening, or Cold enters directly into the interior. Initially, there is fear of cold, cold limbs, no fever, no thirst, and body tremors. The pulse is forceless, deep, and slow; Jia Wei Li Zhong Tang (Modified Regulate the Middle Decoction) is beneficial. It contains Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), and Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens); adding Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) and Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) yields excellent results. If Cold is severe, add Wu Yu (Fructus Evodiae) and Chuan Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, stir-fried with child's urine); Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) and Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae cocos) are effective for stopping vomiting. Ginger decoction must be taken cold (to subdue the primary pathogen and treat its cause). If the pulse disappears, take She Xiang (Moschus) and Zhu Dan (Chole Swinae). For persistent diarrhea, add Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae); for vomiting, add three spoonfuls of Ginger Juice. If the tongue curls, scrotum contracts, and fingernails turn blue, and the pulse is absent, one should learn the Umbilical Steaming method (grind She Xiang (Moschus), Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), and Zao Jiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) into powder, insert into the umbilicus, place a slice of fresh ginger on the umbilicus, and moxa a large moxa cone on top).
Cold pathogen lodging in the Lung
